{Scene Opens: The J Estate: Long Beach, Indiana}
The air is cold and crisp as we see Charles walking back into he and Karin’s house. He steps in through the back door. He had something set up at the back of the property that he was being very cryptic about when he went outside. He walks through the kitchen, turns the corner at the hallway, and goes into the living room where Karin is sitting on the couch.
CJ: “Okay, I'm back...and I know I been mysterious as can be and keeping you wondering, but I need a second to warm up.”
Karin: “Why were you out back, anyways? It’s freezing out there.”
Karin is comfy in a pair of pink sweats and a sleeping tanktop she wears often around the house.
Karin: “I know I shouldn’t be asking about this either, but I’m guessing you still haven’t found a ring yet?”
He sits next to her, scooting close to steal some of her warmth.
CJ: “You know, I should put my cold hands on you as payback?” *He grins.* “I won't, though. You have every right to ask about the ring. It's been several days, and I feel bad for having to push everything back because of everything that suddenly went down Sunday. I want you to know how much it means to me that you've been so supportive, even when I've only slept a few hours that first day. That's real what you're doing holding me down like always. So, about the ring...that's why I was outside.”
Karin looks confused as she wraps her arms around him, attempting to warm him up.
Karin: “You don’t have to thank me for holding you down. That’s what you do when you care about someone. I’ll always support whatever you do, though I have to admit, I’m a little concerned over your lack of sleep again. I know now isn’t the time to really bring that up, since you have so much going on, but always remember I’m here to help in any way I can. If that means I have to do some paperwork for you so you can get an extra two hours sleep, I’ll do it.”
Not mentioning the ring again, she decides to bring up why he was outside again instead.
Karin: “Seriously, what were you doing outside though?”
CJ: “Yeah, I could probably use a little help with that just like you helped me flip that office from amateur hour to a legit office worthy of my new title, but I think that I can settle into this role. Take today for example. Before you came back here to make me pick out the ring all by myself, we got to spend the whole day together almost distraction-free. I plan on making ways for more of that...so, about outside. You're gonna hate me, but I promise I'll make it up to you. I need you to come outside with me…”
Karin: “Babe, are you serious? It’s cold out there and I’m not even dressed for that.”
Seeing the look on his face, she knows it must be important to him. She sighs, standing off the couch and disappearing into their bedroom. She comes out a few minutes later wearing, as usual, one of Charles’ shirts and then puts her coat on. She grabs his arm, staying close to him.
Karin: “Let’s just please hurry? I hate the cold.”
His phone goes off, and he takes a quick phone call. When he hangs up, he sighs. Karin gives him a puzzled look.
CJ: “That was Kayden Pierce. She has to leave IPW. If you give me one second to tweet that, I PROMISE I'ma leave this phone on silent for the rest of the night.”
He sends two tweets and puts the phone on silent before setting it on the counter. He pulls Karin close.
CJ: “I hope I'm not putting you through too much with all of this. I've been on more phone calls and conferences than the restaurant and both gyms combined. I'm sorry for all this.”
Karin: “It’s okay, really. I knew when we first got together that your career was growing, and it would be extremely selfish of me to catch an attitude or be upset right now. Not only am I cool with it, I’m happy for you. I want this for you.”
Her arm is wrapped around his waist, tightening as they approach the back door to exit the house.
Karin: “So, are we gonna get this over with?”
She offers a smile, and prepares for the cool temperatures as they slowly pull the door open.
CJ: “I'm sorry again for taking you out in this eleven degree cold, but I'll hopefully more than make it up to you.”
He holds her closer as he guides her through the back yard. She still seems confused as a light can be seen in the distance. The normal smell of the cold weather is mixed with that of smoke. As the couple gets to the edge of the acre and a half of property minutes later, he opens the back gate.
The beach is seen a few yards away, and the sight ahead confirms the smell of smoke. It seems his venture outside was to set a bonfire on the beach front.
CJ: “Hopefully, the fire will help warm you up. You still look like you have no clue what's going on, huh?”
Karin: “Yeah, just a little.”
Laughter escapes her lips as her breath is visible in the night air.
Karin: “So you brought me out there, to a bonfire in 11 degree weather. This your idea of a romantic gesture?”
CJ: “Well, the bonfire is just part of it. Trust me here. I say that a lot with my little surprises. Let's get closer so you can warm up a little.”
The two draw closer to the fire, and the heat definitely helps with the cold present in the air. As they step up near it, he points down to the sand where he wrote “I love you" in the sand with a stick. He turns her toward him as he takes a deep breath that can easily be seen in the air when he exhales.
CJ: “So, I know this whole thing is crazy just like everything else I put you through, but I wanted to do things a little less spontaneous. So, you know outside of all that work I had and contracts to sign, I went to meet your dad, if you'd like to put it that way. I hope that didn't sound bad. Now, I told you I got my little sign from him, but I didn't tell you how it happened. I was talking to him telling him how I feel. It was cloudy and getting close to being dark, but the sun just somehow peeked through the clouds and shined right close to where I was.”
He stands there for a moment trying to grasp that moment and how it happened as Karin stares at him, the fire flickering off her now teary eyes as Charles continues.
CJ: “I know that was his way of telling me I had his approval. So, I have official permission...I know I already asked the question, but you deserve more than just an impromptu moment. You deserve for me to take you by your cold hands…”
He gets slapped on the arm, but he takes her hands after smiling. For the first time in a few minutes, he pulls her closer with the two still facing each other. He looks her in the eyes.
CJ: “...to look you in the eyes and let you know that you're the best thing that's ever happened to me and that without you I'd just be that shell of a person that was just going through life wrestling and doing not much more. You took me from a guy that was trying to figure out what he was besides a wrestler to a man that has goals, a bright future, and someone everyone can be proud of. I've become a champion inside and outside of the ring because you're here with me keeping my head on straight and giving me love I never thought was possible. I know you know all this already, but I'll never tire of letting you know these things.”
“You have my commitment that I'm not just saying things you want to hear. I think you know that I haven't ever just spit game at you. I really mean it all, and I would be honored if officially, you'd commit to being my wife.”
He takes her glove off her left hand and takes the ring box out of his pocket to hand it to her. She holds the box, looking down at it, with tears in her eyes. The last time he proposed, it felt amazing, but this was different. Inside the box was going to be the ring she would be wearing for the rest of her life if things work out the way they both hope they do. She hands the box back to him.
Karin: “I...I want you to open the box.”
She inhales deeply, nervous and excited at the same time. Her eyes shoot from the box back to Charles’ face as the fire flickers behind him.
Karin: “I can’t believe this is really happening right now…”
He opens the box and takes the ring out, sliding it onto her finger.
CJ: “You know...you didn't answer if you're still sure this is what you want…”
The moment this time hits her harder, as tears stream down her face as she nods her head.
Karin: “Of course this is what I want.”
She collects herself a little, still overcome with joy from the surprise and getting her first look at her ring.
Karin: “Yes...I’ll marry you, Charles.”
Karin looks down at her finger, and even in the dark the ring gleams brightly. She presses herself up against Charles and kisses him next to the romantic, but still chilly fire. Just like getting his permission made the engagement feel more official, this moment feels the same. The kiss lingers as he can feel Karin shivering.
CJ: “So, I guess we should head back inside before you turn to a combination of a Rudolph and Frosty on me. I hope this cold and this crazy fire and words in the sand was worth it. I just wanted to show you how much you mean to me and that I love you.”
Karin: “I love you too, babe.”
She looks like a light bulb went off in her head as her eyes widen.
Karin: “Okay, this might sound crazy, but it’s now or never.”
Charles is now the one wearing an expression of confusion.
Karin: “I’ve always had this dream of being lifted off my feet, and carried on a beach. I can’t think of a better time than now.”
KJ lights up with excitement at the thought.
Karin: “Do you want to carry me back into OUR home?”
Although it likely can't really be seen, he smiles. The “now or never” thing caught him off guard for a moment, thinking he had done something wrong. He lifts her off her feet and carries her as they walk back to what she emphasize as THEIR home. To think that it went from just an idea of getting away halfway across the country to be somewhat of a coping mechanism to deal with his father's death to the very home the two would share and hope to raise a family adds to the size of his smile. At the same time, he finds himself releasing a few tears of joy with those thoughts filling his mind.
CJ: “I think this is gonna be a sit in front of the fireplace with hot cocoa kinda night, if you want. I'm sure you'll wanna warm up before bed?”
Karin: “I think I’ll need to warm up before bed if you’re gonna let me put my hands and feet on you tonight. You know how you are with my cold fingers.”
As they enter their home, both can’t stop smiling.
Karin: “You wanna get the fireplace started while I make us some hot chocolate?”
She playfully kicks her legs as she’s still held in the air by her now, official, fiance.
CJ: “I can do that. Can't have you stabbing me with icicles all night.”
He opens the gate in front of the fireplace and retrieves a log, setting it on fire.
