{Scene Opens: Charles and Karin’s House: Long Beach, Indiana}
Karin pulls her key out of her purse as she arrives back home from her press conference, a little after 7:30 pm. She puts the key in, unlocking the door as she steps into the doorway. She reaches for the light switch but can’t find it. She mumbles to herself.
Karin:
Ugh, I hate coming into a dark house. Charles knows better.
Without fully stepping in, she again reaches around for the light switch. Charles walks up toward her with just the light from the screen on his phone illuminating the area.
Charles:
Okay, first off, sorry, but I taped the light switch. I probably got you going crazy for a second, but just trust me here. I say that a lot, don't I?
Karin:
You taped the lightswitch? Why would you do that?
She steps in finally, knowing that he’s home is enough comfort for her to close the door, darkening the place even more. She glares in the direction of his phone, the only light source in the room at the moment.
Karin:
This isn’t funny, you know I don’t like the dark like that. Can you untape it please?
She reaches her hand out towards the phone, finally feeling his wrist, she grips it tightly.
Charles:
I know you don't like walking into a dark house, but while you were gone, I prepared a bit of a surprise for you, which makes me glad this house is way bigger than the one in LBC cuz I might have had part of it ruined. Here…
He turns on a flashlight app to help make things a little brighter but pointing it down to where the entire area isn't completely lit. He holds her hand and starts to lead their way toward the living room.
Karin:
Another surprise? Babe, I love your surprises, but you don’t have to keep them up. I know you have the biggest match of your career in a few days, your mind needs to be on that, not these surprises.
She squeezes his hand tighter as they continue walking towards the living room.
Karin:
Not that I don’t love the surprises, I do.
Charles:
I know I don't HAVE to...I want to. I also want you to know that these little surprises weren't just some kinda game I was spittin’ at you that's gonna stop just because we live together now.
He smiles and leads her right outside the living room.
Charles:
I know I can't do like our first week together and give you a surprise every day, but this one's a bit different. I took you places last time and kinda bought stuff or whatever. Tonight, I just wanted to celebrate us and...in a way...last night. What I'm trying to say is I wanna do more than just tell you that I love you.
He guides her into the living room where the fireplace has been lit. Right in front of it, a small table is set, almost like it’s Asian style where you sit or kneel in front to eat. Soft music is heard in the background.
Charles:
What do you think?
Karin:
You did all of this?
She walks towards the table, admiring all of the hard work and thought put into it. She turns towards the fireplace, a smile creeping across her face as she turns back towards Charles who is walking towards her.
Karin:
I love it. The fireplace, the set up, and of course...the food.
Karin takes his hand again, leading him to the small table as both kneel down.
Karin:
So, what are we eating? And did you make it?
He makes a face pretending to be appauled.
Charles:
Did I make it? Are you trying to pick a fight with me like me tickling you last night? Of course, I did...and it's chicken marsala. I don't know if you've had that before, but it's really good...and even though it doesn't really match with it, I made some baked Mac since that's your favorite.
He flashes a smile at his girlfriend, liking that she seems happy with his surprise.
Charles:
I even have some of that fancy sparkling juice stuff since you can't have champagne just yet. Hungry?
Karin:
Very. I knew I was going to be nervous at the press conference so I didn’t eat anything after breakfast this morning. I didn’t want to get in front of everyone and lose everything. That sounded gross, sorry babe.
She laughs and picks her fork up, loving the warmth of the fireplace as the heat hits their skin.
Karin:
The sparkling juice, that’s hilarious. Way to make me feel like a baby.
The excited 20 year old digs her fork into the baked mac and cheese, taking a bite.
Karin:
I swear I’ve never had better mac and cheese.
She turns her attention towards him.
Karin:
So tell me about the rest of your day? I haven’t seen you since breakfast pretty much.
After swallowing what he was chewing, he takes a sip from his cup.
Charles:
My day? I don't know. I don't wanna put you to sleep with the adventures I went on today. I went to the gym for a little while and watched some match footage to get ready for these two title matches. See, I'm focused on that, too.
He gives her a bit of a sideways look.
Charles:
I wasn't trying to make you feel like a baby. I was just trying to go all out with this little quiet, just the two of us, dinner. I didn't mean anything by it, honest. I'm sure you were just joking, but last thing I wanna do is ruin this. So, how'd everything go in your point of view? Obviously, I watched it. Just wanna know how you feel.
Karin picks up the juice that is in a fancy looking wine glass. She looks at it before taking a small drink.
Karin:
Before I get into work, I just wanna let you know that you didn’t ruin anything, I was joking. I think it’s cute, all of this. You went all out again, and I appreciate it so much.
KJ takes in another bite of the mac and cheese, obviously her favorite part of the meal.
Karin:
Now, work? I felt like it went pretty good. Those media people can be ruthless, but I kept my composure. I tried to think about what you would say if you were there with me, and I know you would tell me to think clearly before answering, not to let them get in my head. I might have come off a little rude towards Avery, but he kind of deserves it. He tried to downplay the hard work that went into both of my wins so far. He definitely caught me off guard in his little video. It’s been on my mind since last night, well, after our incredible night. It still feels surreal, you know? Being here, preparing for title matches together, knowing this isn’t a vacation like last time, but this is our permanent life now, our home.
Charles:
It does feel surreal. Every time I was here by myself not really sleeping that well, I tried to imagine what this would be like. I don't even think I dreamt it would feel like it does, though. I'm happy, and I feel like all of this change stuff and all of the thoughts going through my head can finally settle down. I feel like I can finally settle down. It being with you just makes it that much more real and better. Does that make sense?
He grabs her hand and rubs it a little, locking their fingers together after.
Karin:
It makes perfect sense, babe. I can only imagine how it felt for you. You were away from everyone. Your mom, sister, friends, me, and you were here in this house by yourself. I missed you, but at least I was still at home, around my mom. The things you do for your career are admirable, but speaking of careers...I wanted to run something by you.
As good as the food is, she ignores it for the moment, scooting closer to him as he still has her hand.
Karin:
I brought this up before, but we never really talked about it, and I feel like we probably should. Lately, I feel like I’ve kind of...failed you, professionally.
Charles looks at her with confusion etched over his face.
Karin:
No, hear me out. I’m your manager, but lately I haven’t really done much as far as closing deals or anything. I’ve been so focused on us, personally, and my career with the training, that I’ve kind of neglected the management side, and I wanted to know how you would feel about maybe hiring a new manager? I’ll always have your best interests in mind, but you need someone who can get out there and get you the deals you deserve, and who can dedicate all of their time to your business. I prefer to dedicate more of my time to us, our personal lives, and to decorating this house. It could use a little KJ touch.
She laughs, hoping he doesn’t see it as her giving up on him professionally.
Charles:
Well, I'm not going to give you my look away in deep thought thing. In a way, I've been kinda expecting this convo to come back up. I honestly didn't know how I'd feel when you brought it back up, but I actually get it now. You can't think you've failed me or anything like that. You've made me just as proud as you have made me happy, okay? Your career is taking off, you're still training and getting better, and now we have this different stage of us. As much as you fuss me for doing too much, I understand that it may be too much to juggle. I have no idea who I could possibly look for, but I guess I can accept your little resignation under one...no two...conditions. You sit in on any interviews...and will you still come with me to Chicago for Redefine every week?
Karin:
I’m there for every interview, I have to make sure whoever takes the job has your best interests, and I can see through a BS’er. And hmmm...Chicago is cold this time of year, I GUESS I can join you there every week, if you promise to keep me warm after the shows?
She lifts her wine glass of juice up and pulls her hand away from his finally, grabbing his glass as well. She hands it to him and holds her glass up for a toast. He smiles and toasts his glass to hers.
Charles:
You sold me when you said you wanna focus more on us and what we have. I'm still waiting to wake up and this not be real, though. I don't know how I managed to get so blessed. It's impossible to imagine you not being a part of my life. I love spending time with you, and I'd be happy to keep you warm after the shows, no matter how you need me to do that...unless you put your cold hands on my back again.
He gets a shiver remembering how cold her hands get.
Charles:
Maybe we should get you some proper gloves.
Karin:
So you want me to wear gloves and then put my hands on your back? That seems a little weird.
She laughs at her own joke, before tucking herself against him as they both sit right in front of the fireplace.
Karin:
Have you really thought about everything that has happened since you lost your dad? I really feel like he’s looking out for you from up there. Your career has never been hotter, you met some of your best friends, we met, it really does seem like he’s blessing you even though he’s no longer here. I wish I could have met him. Think he would have liked me?
Charles:
He would have loved you as much as Ms. Sandra does. I should probably stop doing that. You have a good point there. Like how random is it that I just so happened to bump into that table where you were setting up those flowers and then you feel like you wanted a new job just when Bryan quit? I don't think there's anything other than divine intervention. We were fate. I really wish both of our fathers were here to see us compete back-to-back for titles.
He lets out a sigh as he looks to make sure she's okay with the severity of the conversation. She tilted her face up as she kept leaning against him as they knelt in front of the fireplace. She gave him a smile.
Karin:
Fate is a funny thing. There are still times when I ask myself if my dad would still be around if I didn’t want ice cream that day. Like, if I never asked for ice cream, we never would have left the house, and my dad would have never had that encounter with that…
She struggles to find the words to describe the person who killed her father.
Karin:
That...monster. I can’t even call him a man because what he did was so much lower than anything a normal, caring, man would do to anyone.
She pauses for a few moments.
Karin:
I blamed myself as I got old enough to really understand what happened, but my mom explained fate to me, and in a weird way, I believe it was my dad's time. If it wasn’t us going for ice cream, it might have been something else. I just learned to accept what happened, and I’ll never truly forgive myself, because even with fate...I still keep telling myself that if we stayed inside, it wouldn’t have happened...God, I’m rambling now. You should have cut me off a while ago.
Charles:
You could always ramble or vent or whatever to me til my ears fall off. I want you to be able to talk to me about anything, even if it is difficult. You've made me become more open...even though I'm still working on that...and I just want you to know that I'm always willing to listen to whatever you have to say.
He rubs her cheek and leans toward her to kiss her.
Charles:
I'm pretty sure our food has gotten cold by now, but that's okay as long as you've eaten enough.
Karin:
You’re crazy. I’m gonna finish my plate in a few and go back for seconds. The food is delicious, you outdid yourself. I might have a surprise for you first though.
He raises an eyebrow.
Charles:
Before I play role reversal, I'm glad you liked everything. I was sitting around the kitchen trying to figure out what to make since I didn't want you to have to come home and be hungry long. That's when I decided on this here, especially since I know how you like this fireplace. Eat all you want, though. I made extra just in case. I'm anxious to see what you about to surprise me with, though.
He takes a sip of the juice stuff.
Charles:
Yeah, I ain't buying this crap again. I'll just make Kool-Aid or something. Gawd.
Karin:
Kool-Aid though? You’re a mess. But gimme a sec, I’ll be right back.
Karin pulls herself away from her boyfriend, disappearing out of the room. She goes to her purse and pulls a red box out of it, and makes her way back to join him by the fireplace. She sits down in front of him, with the box in her hands.
Karin:
So, if you hate it, be honest. This is what else I was waiting on today before my press conference. I really hope you like it.
KJ hands the box to him, excitedly trying to read his expression. He smiles at her as he sees that look.
Charles:
Hmmm...you got a me look right now. It's cute on ya.
He opens the box and carefully removes the tiny bit of paper to conceal his gift underneath. He sees a Samsung watch, but it's been customized with a red band. As he inspects it, he sees that —like the bracelet he gave her for Christmas — the watch has been engraved with their initials in hearts. He touches her cheek and pulls her in for a kiss.
Charles:
Thank you so much. This is so thoughtful. You even put my favorite color and our initials in it.
He smiles from ear-to-ear as he looks at her.
Karin:
I’m glad you like it. You’re always doing little things for me, and I saw the watch the other day and asked if they could do a custom band. So after breakfast, I went to pick it up when I told you I was going to the gym. Surprise!
She laughs, placing her finger on the tip of his nose playfully.
Karin:
You’re blushing, now who has a red nose like Rudolph?
He bites his bottom lip and shakes his head, feeling played.
Charles:
You got jokes. You like picking on how I be all actin’ like a teenager when you get me like that. I wonder if you plan that like I map out my little surprises since I see you like that so much. I ain't mad, though. I like this little game we play. Promise me something, though. Down the line we don't just become that couple that loses stuff like this and just are together out of some kind of complacency?
Karin:
I promise. Promise me something too?
Charles:
What’s that?
Karin:
Promise me that this weekend, you go out there and win the NGW Unified title. I’ve seen you work so hard to become one of if not the biggest name in NGW, and you deserve it. Don’t worry about me and my match, I want you to be 100 percent focused on winning yours, okay?
Charles:
I'll do you one better. I promise I'll win this title AND the tag titles in Redefine. I've been working for this weekend for a long time. Just like I said I don't want us to ever grow complacent, I'll never let myself do that professionally, either. You have my word.
Karin:
Good, now, I’m about to go heat this food back up and throw down. Thanks again for an amazing surprise. I’m the luckiest.
Karin gives Charles a quick kiss and grabs both of their plates to heat up as she disappears into the kitchen after their night of surprises.
