The well-documented “week of changes" clearly took its toll on both the sleep pattern of Dead Eye and his ability to execute at the end of his “Kevin Ward, Jr. Memorial” match against “Leviathan” Brian Williams. There was great concern of the former of the two displayed all week long by Karin and Carmen Cambridge. Dead Eye originally shrugged off the notion, simply calling it nerves and assuring everyone he'd be fine. Clearly, that wasn't the case as the week began to near its end. Now, Dead Eye and those closest to him may potentially be at an impasse if things aren't “sorted ASAP,” as he proclaimed they would be on Twitter.
{Scene Opens: Dead Eye’s Long Beach, Can House}
The scene opens as Charles and Karin are entering his house after landing in California. The original plan on Saturday nights called for the two to stay in the city they competed in on Saturday nights, but this was not a typical week for either of them as they both adjust to new things in their lives, each other included.
Karin turns the lights on and the two sit their bags down, the usual cheerfulness betweent he two is absent for the moment. Karin steps out of her shoes and places them by the door as she walks over to Charles and places her hand on his back.
Karin:
What can I do for you bae? Are you hungry after the flight?
Charles:
I'm starvin like Marvin, but I don't know how much I'll be able to eat. I'm pretty disappointed in myself right now. To me, that match wasn't really about winning or losing as it was for the fans there, but I can't shake feeling that I didn't have my best in me tonight.
He puts his hands on his head and slumps forward where his elbows are on his thighs, letting out a sizable breath. Karin takes notice of how worn out he looks and gives him a little space.
Karin:
Honestly you weren’t at your best. There are so many factors to blame for that. I feel responsible, you have spent so much time getting me ready that you cut back on your own workouts. Not only that, but what have I been so worried about for the last two weeks? You hardly ever sleep. In the last week alone, you’ve gotten even worse. I know things are different when we aren’t together at night, but bae, you need your rest. Tonight’s match proved that. Don’t get down on yourself, you’re better than that. We’ll just hire another trainer for me, and work on maybe getting some meds or something that can help you sleep.
Charles lets go of his head and turns toward Karin, holding both of her hands.
Dead Eye:
The last thing I want you to do is blame yourself. You've done nothing but help me in every way you possibly can these past two weeks...speaking of, right about this time makes two weeks we been together… but anyway. None of this waves his hands around himself is your blame. It's all on me. I've tried to play Superman a little too much recently, even when you and everyone else told me to do less. I guess I just wanted to play the Knight in shining armor that saves the day without taking as much a scrape. I've been foolish thinking I could do EVERYTHING, especially without sleep.
He lets out a breath that expresses weight being lifted off of his shoulders for finally admitting to himself and Karin the error in his recent ways.
Charles:
We can get somebody to help train you...maybe Marcus...but I still want to oversee it. I don't want just anybody training you. I want the be..well...second best.
He offers a slight grin, since she has been reminding him that she feels he is the best.
Karin:
You don’t have to oversee it, Charles. You have your own training to worry about. You know I think you’re the best, and I’m not just saying that because we’re a thing, I’m saying that because it's the truth, but look what happened. You weren’t rested, you weren’t focused, and someone else who is REALLY good too, beat you.
Karin takes a minute to step up, pulling her hands away from him but standing directly in front of him as he remains kneeled down. She looks down at him.
Karin:
As your girlfriend, I want you to rest, as your manager, I want the same thing. You are one of the hottest, most talked about wrestlers in the world right now. NGW knows they have a star in you, how many offers were we fighting off recently from other promotions? You signed with Redefine and you’re already being promoted as the Future there. We can’t afford you to lose that luster you have right now, winning might not be everything, but right now, it's vital. I don’t want to be a hindrance in your career, I refuse to be. So, as your manager, I’m telling you, I’ll find someone to train me if Marcus can’t. You need to focus on you. Okay?
Charles:
I know, and I'm finally listening. Tonight was a wake-up call. I will never let a loss or a victory affect me longer than that day. After that, it's time to move on...onto the next one. I told you, though, you're not a hindrance or pushing any momentum I have. I did that, and we together will change that. You have my word that I won't try to do more than I can do at once...outside of doing my best to keep you happy. About the training thing, I'd prefer it to be Marcus just because I know he can teach you what I can. We kin, after all. Honestly, that's something I have to let you decide for a few reasons. One, it's your in-ring career. While I want to positively influence it, I don't want you to think I'm tryna run it cuz I kinda feel that way sometimes when I hear the words leave my mouth. Second part of that is the fact that Marcus is in Indy. I can't tell you that you have to have him train you because that would force you to move. Again, not tryna make those decisions for you. It ain't right. So, it's up to you. Whatever you choose, I'll support 100%.
Karin:
There you go making things about me again.
Karin can’t hold in her quiet laughter.
Karin:
You have to be the most selfless man I’ve ever been around, and I love that. Why don’t we just get through tonight and we can figure all of that out in the morning? I’ll make you something to eat, then after that I’ll run you a bath, then I’ll tuck you in…
Karin laughs again, this time louder as she places her hand on top of his head as he continues kneeling in front of her.
Karin:
And then if you want me to stay I will, but otherwise I’m going to go home and let you get a good night's sleep. You need it.
He can't help but let out a laugh at the thought of her “tucking him in for the night". He kisses her on the cheek.
Charles:
Well, I wasn't expecting you to make a decision like that right this second. I also want your best for you the same way you do for me. We both have to be ready for All Wrapped Up. Three things … one, what you cooking; two, I'd love for you to stay with the me tonight if you don't mind. I kinda need you here so I don't over think everything and stay up all night; and c, how'd it feel pinning Mr. Get bad tonight and getting that first win?
Karin:
To answer the first question, I’m cooking whatever you’re in the mood for. Of course I’ll stay the night, I have enough clothes to last a few days since we were originally planning on staying out of town, and third…
Karin can’t hide the huge smile that spreads across her face. Her eyes light up.
Karin:
Getting that win felt incredible, like, I still don’t have words for it honestly. I went out there, just hoping to make a connection with the fans, have some fun, and avoid getting hurt. I was hoping I would win, but I wasn’t a hundred percent sure I could beat someone like Avery, but when I got the three count, I almost cried in the ring. God, how embarrassing would that have been?
He smiles as he sees that familiar glow he's grown accustomed to, the same one neither had just minutes ago when they entered the house. The air was definitely regulated to an environment it should be for the two.
Charles:
Nothing wrong with letting out a few tears of joy in the ring. It just shows that you're proud of yourself and enjoy every moment of it. No shame in that at all, bae. I just know dude is gonna try to blame me for him crapping his pants when I was just coming down to be with you regardless of the outcome. Now, crapping yourself in the ring...plenty shame in that, yadig?
He rubs his goatee for a moment.
Charles:
I have two ideas...breakfast for um...late midnight snack? And let's cook it together?
Karin:
You know you can’t tease me like that and not come through in the clutch, right?
Her eyes find his goatee after he rubbed it. She moves her hands to his chin and scratches his goatee with her nails, gently.
Charles:
Somehow you knew I had an itch. And whatchu mean? does a Jamaican accent I always come tru in de clutch, mon. Damn, that makes me wanna watch Cool Running for some reason…
Realizing he got himself momentarily side-tracked, along with a growl from his stomach, Charles stands up and stretches.
Charles:
So, who's doing what? It's kinda late, but I wanna make some homemade biscuits.
Karin:
Cool, you get biscuits, I’ll handle the eggs.
Karin looks up at her boyfriend now that he’s standing, she leans against him.
Karin:
Are you sure you wanna do all of that cooking tonight? I seriously don’t mind making you some grilled cheese’s or something and letting you relax. Whatever you want.
Charles:
As good as grilled cheese sounds right about now, you GOTSTA try these biscuits. They ma grandmammy recipe that even “Mrs. Sandra" don't have.
He lets out a slight smile, reminiscing of waking up on weekend mornings to that smell coming from the kitchen. The smile also coming from the fact that, since he opened up about the feeling of loss, he was able to just have a fond memory and nothing more.
Charles:
Besides, I'd rather be doing something together, anyway...even if you gon try to hog up the kitchen.
He darts to the kitchen to escape the usual arm slap, Karin right behind him. As they reach the kitchen, she wraps her arms around him and they both share a laugh.
Karin:
You’re so lucky that I’m making tonight about you, because you almost got popped after that last comment!
Karin lets him go, and begins gathering what she needs to prepare her eggs.
Karin:
Promise me that after we eat and clean up, we’re getting in bed and you’re going to sleep more than three hours?
Charles puts out his left arm, pointing as he talks.
Charles:
All I have in this life are my balls and my word...and you have my word.
He stands back at a normal position, stopping the Tony Montana impression.
Charles:
You have a promise that I'm gonna sleep more than three hours. I gotta take this black shirt off, though, or I'll have flour all over it.
Karin:
Gimme the shirt, I know you just wanted to take it off anyways.
Karin laughs as Charles smirks and pulls the shirt off, tossing it to her. She catches it and rolls it up before smacking at his backside with it, laughing as she runs into the bedroom to get rid of the shirt. He jumps a little, caught off-guard by the sting. He laughs to himself as he grabs everything he needs to make his biscuits. He turns on the oven and waits for Karin to come back into the kitchen as the scene fades.
