[On Camera]
[The Masks We Wear]
[Las Vegas, NV]
[August 11th, 2016]
The scene opens up with Gavin Grimes walking in an aisle inside of a Halloween store. There are an assortment of masks in front of him that he’s looking at; Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, Venom, Scream, V Vendetta, the list goes on as Gavin runs his fingers over them while walking through the aisle. He pauses in front of a luchador wrestling mask and picks it up. He turns and holds the mask up for the camera to see before he begins.
Gavin Grimes: ”The wrestlers in Mexico wear these lucha libre masks to represent their story. While it gives them mystery and anonymity in a country that is obsessed with wrestling, it also plays a huge part in what they’re portraying as a wrestler. Basically, they aren’t being themselves but they are portraying a character through wearing these types of masks. While there are some wrestlers out here in the states that were these masks, it’s not a prominent thing like it is in Mexico. One thing that I’ve noticed recently is that there are a lot of people in this industry who wear invisible masks. People who portray to be something that they’re not.”
“Take Avery Miles III for instance. He comes out here and tries to say that he’s not like me. He’s not cocky, arrogant or confident and he’s not the type to run people down. If that were true, then how come we saw him melt down this morning? One of the people you specifically went at was Sasha Foote, after she called you out for making fun of her for being in a goldfish on a pole match over in CWT. Yeah, I made fun of that match too but the thing is, the person she lost to in that match, Nikita, is a champion in CWT. Despite how gimmicky the match is, you’re trying to paint a picture of Sasha as if she lost to Gray Malone; but no, that’s not what happened, she lost to a top champion. Sure, Sasha has one win and three losses over in CWT but at least she’s held a Heavyweight Championship before.”
“What about you, Avery? Have you held one? Do you know what it’s like to be the man, the face of a company? Hell no you don’t. Speaking of CWT and you making fun of Sasha’s record, didn’t you have two wins and three losses over there? Oh wow, one more win than Sasha Foote. Seems like you didn’t do your best work in CWT, did you? Hell, it seems like your best work comes in NGW where you get served up KEG and John Blade on a platter. Everywhere else you’ve been exposed for being a gullible idiot with no edge. Isn’t that why you let Alex Jones take you head off in Valentine Wrestling when the match was ruled a no contest after he faked an injury? Everyone knows that Alex Jones is a slimeball but you fell for it because you’re naive. You said in your last promo that you don’t quit and give up but after a few shortcomings in those companies, it was only a matter of time before you quit and you did just that. How can you say you continued on with losses and failures when you left both of those companies after… You know… Losses?”
“So no, you’re not like me in the same manner of not quitting and giving up. You move on to whatever works best for Avery Miles III and you RUN away from whatever trials and tribulations show up at your doorstep. You’re still running Avery and you’re going to run out of gas against someone like me who’s going to call you out for all of your bullshit and expose you for who you are. And how about your showing over in #FSociety where you tried to be best friends with your opponent, Adrien Cochrane, and he beat you. You can brag about beating Jenson Idol, a four month pro in an indy wrestling company, but what happened when you fought a multiple time former heavyweight champion in a bigger company?”
“You lost because you couldn’t cut it against Adrien. Let me ask you this, do you think he’s better than me? Truly, do you? Because most people will tell you that I would wipe the floor with a guy like Adrien Cochrane, a dude who lost to Lord Raab in Inferno Wrestling. If you don’t know who Lord Raab is, he was the equivalent of NGW’s KEG, except for the fact that he was even filthier than KEG. Raab drank a mixture of his own blood and urine in front of the Inferno cameras while cutting a promo and he even ate bugs to add onto the disgustingness. That’s the fucktard that Adrien Cochrane lost to in Inferno Wrestling and then you lost to Adrien after he was AWAY FOR FIVE MONTHS. The dude took a vacation and it seemed like you took it easy on him in your promos, a guy you barely knew. But me? A friend you’ve known for eight months and someone who has had your back on multiple occasions, you didn’t mind getting personal with me during your second promo even though I only addressed your wrestling career in my first promo. What? Didn’t expect me to fire back? I’m surprised that you would bring up Ashleigh and I fighting and what we go through in your promo AFTER you had breakfast with her.”
Gavin sets down the lucha libre mask and pulls up a Two-Faced mask from the Batman Animated Series.
Gavin Grimes: ”What kind of two-faced shit is that, Avery?”
A shit eating grin runs over Gavin’s face before he lets out a laugh.
Gavin Grimes: ”But two-faced is becoming your thing, right? It’s one of your new masks. You seem like the kind of guy that is nice to someone’s face and then trashes them behind closed doors but when it comes to people like Ashleigh and I? We do it to your face and we’ll make sure you hear it. People wanna call me a bully but the thing is, I’m just straight up with people and if they don’t like it, then so be it. I simply speak my mind but I’ve always done things the right way. I’ve never cheated, never done backstage attacks that weren’t warranted; I’ve always accepted challenges and I’ve always respected the squared circle. Say what you want about me but I’m the kind of champion that people can look up to and respect.”
Gavin sets down the two-faced mask and grabs an angel mask which has a little halo over the head and everything.
Gavin Grimes: ”This is the main mask that Avery has been hiding behind before the real him reeled its ugly head for the world to see and it all started when people talked about his personal life. It went started with a couple of siblings, then to Persephone, next up was Jenson and now there’s me. Avery has been hiding behind a ‘good guy’ demeanor ever since he showed up on the scene but now we’re beginning to see the selfish nature of his ways. He became a wrestler when his loved ones didn’t want him to become one… He kept on wrestling when Alycia went through a traumatic life event instead of taking care of her and then he quickly moved on to Taylor. Maybe it’s Taylor who’s been bringing out the true colors of Avery Miles, am I right? Because for a rookie wrestler in a developmental company, she sure talks like a veteran and goes at former heavyweight champions like she’s been in their shoes.”
“Like the way she’s went at Cecily Bell? How she talked about how Cece’s extensions were in the ‘trash you’d be familiar with since that’s what you are.’ That’s after Taylor showed up to an IPW show and confronted Cece, a former heavyweight champion. How’s that any of her business when she’s in Alpha Rising, a developmental company that’s under IPW and NGW. For being a green rookie in this business, she sure acts like she knows a lot more than everybody else. Let’s not forget how she told Cece to ‘stop being a fucking victim’ and to get ‘over your past.’ I guess it’s not okay when people like me call you out on your shit, Avery, but it’s okay for the woman that you’re living with to call out anyone she sees fit even though she’s not on any of our levels.”
Gavin grabs a devil mask and places it on one of his shoulders before placing the angel mask on the other shoulder.
Gavin Grimes: ”This angel mask on my shoulder? It represents the Avery Miles III that we all used to know. The one that was humble, the one that had everyone’s back, the one that used to not tear people down. This devil mask? It represents what you’re showing all of us now and I can’t help but make the distinction that the change in your demeanor is because of Taylor. She’s this devil mask here, she’s the one who’s changed you into something you didn’t want to be because how else would things change like they are now? You weren’t like this until she walked into your life. Now Avery, I don’t mind it when people tear each other down and it does gets nasty in this sport with what we say. Like right now, I tear people down when it’s appropriate but you know what? I don’t like liars and you my friend, you’re trying to lie to all of us and you’re slowly imploding under the pressure. It’s why you were unapologetic to Sasha Foote for insulting her, it’s why you called some random Twitter troll a ‘dumb fuck.’ That’s not fitting of the persona that you’ve portrayed for the world to see.”
“One of the most amusing things I’ve seen recently on Twitter is you throwing out challenges to Dirk Bentley AND Sasha Foote. Remember how you said you didn’t shit talk everyone on the roster and didn’t throw out challenges? That you simply kept you head down and stayed in your lane? Your promo from yesterday said those exact words and then you went and had a war of words with Sasha, Dirk and others before throwing out challenges at them and getting your challenges denied. You want to know why that is, Avery? Because a match with you doesn’t have the notoriety that so many people in this business crave so much. No matter what you do, you’re still the same boring, plain as fuck Avery Miles that nobody gives a shit about.”
“You’ve dominated the Marquee division? Nobody cares. You beat Jenson Idol for the Heritage Championship? Nobody cares. You won some cup? Nobody cares. But you know who people do care about? They care about me, the longest reigning Unified Heavyweight Champion in NGW history. Even Sasha Foote said that she took up the challenge with me because it was one that she couldn’t pass up. But she could pass up a challenge with you, right? Now You want to bring up how I’m scared? How my legacy is on the line? Please, Avery, my legacy is as unbreakable as the Ten Commandments; as if God himself wrote it down on a couple of stone tablets with His own hand. It’s that strong and mighty. I could retire today and be one of the greatest of all time and easily the greatest NGW has had and ever will have!”
A grin runs over Gavin’s as he takes the two masks off of his shoulders and sets them back down where they belong. He then grabs a V For Vendetta mask and puts it over his face.
Gavin Grimes: ”One of my favorite quotes from V for Vendetta is, ‘By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.’”
He slides the mask up onto his head and leaves it sitting there so that the camera can see his face once again.
Gavin Grimes: ”This is the only mask that I wear, Avery. I don’t spread lies, I don’t bullshit people and I don’t hide who I am. I put myself out there for everyone to see because I’m not afraid to be criticized, in fact, I thrive off of it. That’s why people see Ashleigh and my fights go public because we don’t give a fuck about the perception that all of you have of us. We say what we need to say and who we need to say it to and we deal with it. Truth is what we live by and we don’t hide who or what we are. I’ve never claimed to be a great guy, Avery, I’ve never tried to make that assertion. But by simply being who I am and not worrying about what anybody thinks about me with the exception of Ash, I’ve conquered NGW and have taken the wrestling world by storm. While you let your flip-flopping ways hold you back,I simply just go out to the ring and perform and kick ass and win.”
“But you can go ahead and keep saying that I spin things into lies like you said in your last promo. The thing is, all of the proof is out there for the world to see that I’m simply right and you’re wrong. There was one Tweet from you this morning that stood out the most. It’s where you said something along the lines of, ‘Done being the pushover people think I am. It’s time I show them who the fuck I am.’ So you think by being the humble, nice guy that you were being a pushover? But hey, now you’re going to show all of us who you REALLY are, right? You’re going to show all of us that you’re just like the rest of us. You tear people down, you say mean and vile things and you gloat. As annoying as Persephone is, I remember that match where you beat her and how much you gloated.”
“I remember how much you rubbed it in her face over and over again. That guy Jenson Idol that you’ve been bad mouthing? That Taylor has been making subtweets about because she’s too afraid to tag him since she’s scared to go at people head on? He didn’t gloat when he beat Persephone, he actually showed her respect. But you Ave, you’ve gloated and prodded every time you beat someone who you didn’t like. You made sure to stoop to the lowest level and rub salt in the wound. The best part of this is when you said how I was a liar and that I wouldn’t gloat after beating you if you took shots at Ash and how she was attacked by Dirk. News flash, Avery, Dirk is the one who put her in the hospital and I BEAT HIM! Did I gloat afterwards? Go look back on Twitter and you will see Bentley and I both giving each other props on the match. That cowboy brought it and gave me the match of his life. I told him great match and moved on with my life. I didn’t gloat, I didn’t rub it in and I wasn’t an asshole like you. So tell me again how I’m a liar? Enlighten me!”
As Gavin utters that last phrase, a small child who looks to be about ten years old comes up to Gavin, holding up a marker and a V For Vendetta mask after seeing the Unified Champion with one sitting on top of his head.
Young Boy: “Mr-Mr.Grimes! Can you sign this for me?”
Gavin smiles and nods before grabbing the mask and signing it. He then pulls out a twenty dollar bill and hands it to the child.
Gavin Grimes: ”There you go, kiddo, and the mask is on me!”
Gavin taps the kid on his head and smiles and the kid gives him a hug before running off in excitement.
Gavin Grimes: ”So Avery, you claim that you don’t define yourself by your in ring failures because you get to go home and not worry about the wrestler that is Avery Miles. You get to be a hero, a daddy and a loving husband. Let me make one thing clear, my marriage to Ashleigh is the most important thing in my life, that much is obvious. But she knows just like everyone else that I eat, sleep and breath wrestling. It’s the thing that has brought me to life and given me a second chance. That’s why I scrap and I claw and do whatever I can to win because wrestling took a failure and created a winner, a fucking champion. Everything else chewed me up and spit me out, it all held me down. But no, not wrestling and I will forever give back to this sport by putting everything on the line and being the best possibly wrestler that I can be.”
“By the way you talk about wrestling, Avery, you talk about how it’s basically a job… You act like it’s a basic career where you clock in at nine in the morning before clocking out at five in the evening and heading home and you do that five days a week before going back home to your family. You mow the lawn, play with your daughter, watch late night programmings with your significant other and then go to bed so that you can wake up in the morning and do it all over again. That’s how wrestling is for you, Avery. But for the majority of us? For me? Wrestling is life. Wrestling is a twenty-four hours, seven days a week experience. There’s no vacations or time to rest on our laurels. Sitting back and being content with what you’ve accomplished is something that a Marquee Champion would say.”
“Heavyweight Champions like myself don’t rest on our laurels, we get up every single day, ready to fight whatever comes our way. I didn’t become the longest Unified Heavyweight Champion by accident, Avery. There’s a reason I’ve stood at the top of the mountain for so long and it’s because I do it better than everyone else and I don’t get content. I took an already prestigious championship that was held by Bronx Valescence and Dead Eye and I made it even more prestigious. You took the Marquee Championship which was held by nobodies like Tara, KEG, Latoya Hixx and a MIDGET named Fizz and you raised up the belts standards. The thing is, Avery, it’s not hard to raise that belts standards when you consider everyone who held it. Levi Daughterty defended it one time before losing it to you and you and him never even defended your tag team championships, so it’s not like he brought any prestige to that piece of shit title either.”
“But hey, congratulations on forfeiting that championship after Honor and Victory so that you could move up to the Five Lakes division. That’s a huge milestone, Avery, but it’s still not a big deal. With Dean Judas and Dirk Bentley both being released, the Unified division is wide open and you could jump into it. But you don’t want to, right? You’d rather slum it up in the Five Lakes division because in the back of your mind, you think Ashleigh is going to beat me at Honor and Victory and that will make the Five Lakes Championship vacant and something for you to go after. If you didn’t believe that, you probably wouldn’t of forfeited your Marquee Championship because you know for damn sure that you can’t beat Ashleigh, just like how you can’t beat me. You do these things because you’re scared to swim in shark infested waters. Right now, that’s every division but the Marquee division.”
“The Tag Team Championships are held onto Corey Graves and Aurora Knight, two people you know for certain you can’t beat because they’re sharks, especially Aurora, who’s got quite the bite in the ring. Then you have two unstoppable sharks as the Five Lakes Champion and Unified Champion in Ash and I. You don’t want to be in these waters right now, you want to sit back and wait until the coast is clear so that you can have an easier path. That’s the Avery Miles way, trying to find the easiest path possible while avoiding adversity. That’s why I say you’re simply ‘okay’ with just getting by. You stick to the low key divisions that won’t give you a real challenge. It gives you the opportunity to spread yourself thin and chill instead of focusing on the big picture. I believe you have what it takes to be in this division of mine that I’ve ruled over but I just believe that you’re lazy and enjoy being content. So no, your little move up to the Five Lakes Championship division? It doesn’t mean shit. I see your thought process from a mile away.”
He pauses before reaching down and picking up a mask of the superhero cartoon character, Underdog. Gavin smiles as he looks down at the mask.
Gavin Grimes: ”I loved this cartoon when I was a kid. Shoeshine Boy’s alter ego was the hero named Underdog. This is another mask that represents you, Ave. I saw the anger and fire in your eyes because I said that you couldn’t beat me, because I said that you don’t have what it takes. But how am I supposed to take you seriously when you don’t know how to get on my level? Near the end of your promo, you talked about how you KNOW that you have an uphill battle to fight going up against me. You said that you know that you’re bringing a knife to a gunfight in our match. That right there is self doubt. Instead of saying, ‘No Gavin, I’m bringing you the fight of your life and I’m going to match you with the same fire and intensity that you bring every night!’, you instead said, ‘I know I’m not the favorite and I have a knife while you have a gun.’ You paint yourself as the underdog because that’s what you KNOW you are. Deep down, you KNOW that you can’t beat me.”
“You want to say that I let the NGW Unified Heavyweight Championship define me? Bitch, please! I DEFINE THE UNIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP! When people think of this belt, they think of me. It’s not the championship that makes the wrestler, it’s the wrestler that makes the championship and I’ve made this one of, if not the best, in all of wrestling. Why? Because I don’t play the underdog card, I play the I’m better than you card and because of that? I have a winning hand every time. So win or lose, my legacy isn’t on the line at Vendetta, Avery. Yours is.”
Gavin slides the V For Vendetta mask back down onto his face.
Gavin Grimes: ”Beneath this mask, Avery, lies the truth. The truth is, I know that I’m going to fail one day and that I won’t be the Unified Champion forever. The thing is, I’ll do what I’ve always done when I’ve lost and that’s come back even better. So go ahead and speak of my future downfall because guess what? You won’t be a part of it, Avery. Why? Because you don’t have what it takes to beat me and that’s not me doubting you, it’s just facts off of what you’ve said. While you went on a tyrant this morning about how you’re done letting people shit on you and your career, you showed how vulnerable you truly are. But me? I take it all in stride and the trash talk makes me better. So about that knife you’re bringing to this gun fight? How about I give you a gun instead? Because it still wouldn’t matter since behind this mask of truth that I’ve shown all of you over the last eight months… Lies the man you all know as Gavin Grimes… And he’s fucking bulletproof!”
Gavin pulls the V For Vendetta mask off and throws it to the side and he glares into the camera with a serious demeanor before the scene cuts out.
