Outside of his home, on the backside deck by a vast swimming pool, sits Gray Malone and Kelly Lowell. They are both sitting in black leather chairs, with a black marble table sitting between them. They are talking amongst each other, and laughing, as the cameraman signals that he is ready. The countdown goes, and the camera begins to record.
Kelly Lowell: “Hello NGW fans, I’m Kelly Lowell and today I’m here with one of the most polarizing figures in the entire wrestling world, of course I’m talking about Gray Malone. Thanks for sitting down with me, Gray.”
Gray Malone: “Thank you Kelly. And a big thank you to the fans of NGW. You all are the reason that NGW is where it’s at right now. But, Kelly...a big second thank you for giving me a chance to tell the world everything, and unlock the mystery of Gray Malone for these fans.”
Kelly Lowell: “Well that’s actually a good place to start. You thanked the fans of NGW, but it was just recently that you said…”
Kelly looks around.
Kelly Lowell: “F the NGW. What was that about?”
Gray Malone: “When I mention the NGW, it has nothing to do with the fans. The fans are what makes the NGW shine. We are the talent that performs for the fans. You see, the lifeblood of any organization is the smiles and the imaginations of those that come to see the performance. Yet with all organizations, comes greed and corruption. The NGW as a corporate structure is something, I do not agree with, nor will I ever. When I say F the NGW...I mean F the system. F the machine, if you will.”
Kelly Lowell: “Okay, that makes a little more sense. I think fans were confused, and even as I’ve gotten to know you, I was slightly confused as well.”
Kelly clears her throat and places her hands on the marble table between them.
Kelly Lowell: “As everyone can see, you have some amazing property here that you and your daughter live on. I think recently, you’ve been teased and criticized over and over again about your win/loss record by not only your peers, but also your detractors. First, tell me where Gray Malone comes from and how you managed to own all of this land, because I know it wasn’t by losing matches. Second, let me know how you truly feel about constantly being called out on the losses, and what you’ve done to change things up.”
Gray sits back in his seat a bit, thinking back.
Gray Malone: “First of all, we have to go back to my teenage years. I had a best friend named Cotton Pierce. We decided long and hard that wrestling is what we wanted to do, so we did it. We scrapped money together, and got simplistic, basic training, and we went all in. Independent shows that paid very little was what we were doing, until of course Cotton was in a certain Main Event with a man that was praised for his looks, instead of his wrestling skill.”
Gray looks a little uncomfortable, but keeps on.
Gray Malone: “He took a bad slam, and landed on his head. He was paralyzed from the waist down, and his career was over. We remained friends, and he married a beautiful woman, whom had a little girl from a previous marriage. My friend died, and his ultimate goal was to open up a wrestling school. I carried that legacy for his family. Now...23 schools later, nationwide, I think his wife and child will be okay. As such, my daughter and I are also very good because of the businesses. I stay a wrestler because of the love of the battle, not the money. Now, as far as my record, and all the talk of my losses, trust me, it bothers me none. Just like when you become a wrestler, Kelly….I don’t want you to worry about records, or how many wins and losses you possess. I am known throughout the world because of the shows I put on in front of those fans. That is my purpose on this earth.”
Kelly Lowell: “Well, it’s no secret I’ve gotten to know you personally. You’ve been a helping hand in the early stages of my training, and while working with you, I’ve noticed that your purpose might be to entertain people, but where you truly shine is as a father. I’m not sure you want her name out there, but tell me about your relationship with her, and how that ties into your career. Is she the biggest motivator in your life currently? Has she always been?”
Gray nods to himself, and smiles.
Gray Malone: “Well just so you know, out of every student I’ve had a hand in training, you are very unique. I know soon, you will be training more with Jan once his gym is fully operating, and I am happy about that. But just know that my daughter has considered you a big sister, and I myself think of you as another daughter. Even the dog gets some love from me, I guess.”
They both laugh.
Gray Malone: My daughter is the sole inspiration for my entire life, not just my career as a wrestler. When I lost my wife over a decade ago, she was the wall that I leaned on for years. I like to think that her mother rests inside of her soul, helping me to keep solid. I see her when I look into my daughter’s eyes, and it calms me. But I like to think of Layne as my personal Phoenix. Yet it isn’t her that rose from the ashes. Instead she was the hand that pulled me from those ashes, and as such, NO ONE will nor can really defeat me in this business. All the talk and the ganging up against me, is nothing compared to what I went through in my life. I am unbreakable, and I am undeniable. And because of that, I will march on….because I have my daughter in my corner.”
Kelly found herself nodding in agreement, she had experienced first hand the relationship between Gray and Layne.
Kelly Lowell: “Switching back to NGW, you mentioned everyone ‘ganging up on you’. Why do you think that is? What is it about Gray Malone that provokes a gang mentality in terms of the approach to attack against you?”
Gray Malone: “I first came into NGW, and started tweeting nonsense to cause a stir. I mainly did this for the fans to know where I had went to, so they could switch to watching NGW. So on that note, Devlin Scott...you are welcome! But in my opinion, I think things went downhill, when I saw a young talent getting bullied left and right. I know this young lady had a relationship with a fellow wrestler, but I also noticed that he wasn’t taking up for her. If there is one thing that I cannot stand, it is bullying of any kind. So I decided to pull her aside, and try to tell her that I could help her. I thought with my heart, and not my head. It’s a weakness I have. Regardless, I was labeled a disease of couples, or whatever else I was called, and along came the all vs. one deal. Now, in reality, not one of these so called superstars hold a candle to me. Soon, they will all realize this, one by one. But it did kind of suck to get that reaction…...especially from the young lady herself, who no longer talks to me. I guess true friends are really that hard to find.”
Kelly Lowell: “I can’t help but notice how much your tone has changed in the last few minutes. You sound genuinely disheartened, even heart broken in a way. It’s my job to uncover things, but I’m fairly certain everyone knows who you are talking about based on social media interactions. What do you want to say to the people that are labeling you as a troublemaker, or even a homewrecker? Is that the real Gray Malone, or are you getting labeled, unfairly?”
Gray looks at Kelly for a second. He then looks into the camera.
Gray Malone: “I want them all to simply say…...Thank You. I want them to thank me for their paychecks getting larger. I want them all in NGW, IPW, and Alpha Rising, to thank me for the arenas they perform in being that much more full with fans. I want Devlin Scott to thank me for the constant influx of talent that continuously pours into his 3 brands...just to get a look, or maybe even a whiff of Gray Malone. Kelly, I have made this company what it is presently. I make it interesting. I make it exciting. They all want a piece of it, by challenging me, or talking bad about me. Just mentioning my name creates a buzz. Because of my involvement with my former friend and her now fiancee….they are both superstars. Because everyone jumped against me, they are all well known names. And yet….I hear no thank you’s at all.”
He looks back at Kelly and smiles.
Gray Malone: “It’s okay though. I’ll collect each and every thank you, personally. All the way up the ladder that I helped create. To the very top, where Devlin Scott sits.”
Kelly lowers her gaze and seems like she’s struggling to understand what he was saying.
Kelly Lowell: “Okay, personal opinions aside, I’m a professional and I have to be unbiased. How can you say that Devlin Scott should thank YOU out of everyone in NGW, IPW, and Alpha Rising? You’re an amazing talent, I think most would admit that, but do you not think people are flocking to NGW to watch the champions like Gavin and Ashleigh Grimes, and Avery Miles? Those are the people that wrestlers are signing contracts in hopes to compete against, are they not?”
Gray Malone: “Of course they are, Kelly. Now that these superstars are being watched. Before me, they were nothing. After me, everyone knows who they are. So they will thank me. And Avery will be first, once I snatch the Marquee Championship from his grip. I’ll grab his hand, and looks for his thanks. On and on, this will transpire. Right up the ladder that in some spots is plagued by corruption. As far as Devlin himself, it doesn’t matter if he thanks me or not. I blame him for my creation. I know you don’t understand that, Kelly. He wouldn’t either. It’s due to people like him, that I lost everything. He is the only one of that kind, that I see before me. He pays, one way or another.”
He looks at Kelly and grabs her hand.
Gray Malone: “You have seen the best of me. You will never see the side that Scott will see. That is really all I can say about that.”
Kelly slowly pulls her hand away, shaking her head with a smile on her face.
Kelly Lowell: “I guess I’m fortunate then.”
She clears her throat.
Kelly Lowell: “Two more questions and then I’ll let you get back to your day. First, you know I have interviewed some of the greatest athletes of all time. I’ve interviewed people like Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning, Shaquille O’Neal, Tom Brady is on my list, hopefully."
She laughs.
Kelly Lowell: “If you could compare yourself to any athlete from any sport ever, who would that comparison be made to?”
Gray Malone: “First of all, I’ve met Tom Brady. He’s a prick. So don’t bother with him. As far as who I would compare myself to, that is quite hard. There is nothing or no one like me. I know I don’t possess it, but if I could have as big a heart as my daughter, I think I’d be perfect. But I have a bad side that was ingrained inside of me because of a tragic life. I just feel that she is the most perfect person in the world, and no athlete, politician, king or queen compares to my phoenix.”
Kelly nods.
Kelly Lowell: “Finally, to wrap things up, is there anything you want to tell the world about Gray Malone? Anything at all that you want your fans, or your detractors, to know?”
Gray stands up, and walks behind his chair. He places both hands on the back of it.
Gray Malone: “I’d tell my fans, never give up on any dream you have inside of your hearts. You will always face haters, and critics. That simply means that you have chosen the right path. They won’t touch you. Break through those barriers and strive to be the greatest at what you do. To my Detractors, I want to say thank you. From the past to right here, right now, you all validate just how great I am. I won’t quit until I’ve climbed every peg in the NGW, and defeat everyone of you all, and in doing so, I hope you find it within yourselves to cling onto every moment of sharing that ring…..MY ring, with a legend. To Devlin Scott, I guarantee you, that one day, when you feel comfortable with your surroundings…..the shadows will catch up to you.”
He walks behind Kelly, and places both hands on her shoulders.
Gray Malone: “I’d lastly like to thank this young lady right here. Though many of you may not know it yet, Kelly, here, is going to be a real big superstar in that ring soon. She has all my blessings and she has all my wisdom and tools at her disposal, as she sees fit. And Kelly, you are always welcomed here with Layne and I. Consider this home, whenever you need it. I sincerely mean it.”
Kelly Lowell: “You know I appreciate the hospitality, but that’s for another interview.”
She looks up and behind her with a smile before turning back to the camera.
Kelly Lowell: “NGW’s next stop is in New Orleans, Louisiana. You can catch Gray Malone along with all of the NGW stars, every other Saturday night. Until next time, I’m Kelly Lowell.”
The camera fades out as the interview officially comes to an end.
