002 * Sophomore Slump
*Avery Miles III is sitting at home on the couch. Taylor and Brooklyn are off enjoy some shopping as the television is tuned into MTV. Instead of expecting music videos, images of reality shows and teen dramas are plastered all over the television*
You know, I could remember when MTV showed music videos. And shows like Beavis and Butt-head even showed music videos on the show. But WHEN music was actually shown on television we would see shows like Total Request Live countdown the newest and best music videos. Out of how large music was becoming in today’s world, the term “Sophomore Slump” arose. Sometimes also known as a jinx. Essentially it is that the followup to a debut often does not live up to the hype of the first. It happens with a second album, it happens in sports, and it can even happen with movie sequels. Coming into the second PWE show, and the first Demolition, it is easy to see how one of us might not live up to the hype.
Cris Striker is the man on the other side of the ring. A little bit of research and he hails from the East Coast. I have not worked or traveled much on that side of the states, but I am lucky enough to get some work over there with PWE. Just like myself, Striker came out the gate swinging and picked up a win in his debut. After Demolition, only one of us will be undefeated while the other will be at five hundred. Simple math. Will one of us suffer the sophomore jinx? Will we come up just short of continuing being the best in PWE? It is only a matter of time before we earn our first loss, but the question is… who will earn it this week?
*Avery shuts the television off and heads out to the front yard of his Henderson, Nevada home. In the coming days, he and Taylor look to get renovating on her childhood home back in Indio, California and they will be able to move back there. Avery looks up and down the street as things are pretty quiet. It is a school night and most kids are inside getting ready for bed or doing homework. Avery heads out further into the street as the sounds of Vegas are of in the distance, but not close enough to make out anything specific.*
I am lucky as I stand here right now. A great girlfriend. An amazing daughter. I have been pretty successful in my endeavors and I will continue to truck along week in and week out. The question is, Striker, what would a sophomore loss do to you? I am sure that you will continue your no non-sense ways and crack someone right in their jaw. You seem to be the sort of man that had it hard growing up where you did, and you carry that heavy burden with you. Unfortunately, I cannot know or understand where you come from. I was lucky enough to grow up in a suburb with amazing parents that helped to push my early in my life. Being a third generation star, there is pressure on me to succeed more than they did; but it is not a life or death battle by any means. I don’t know a lot about Baltimore, but I can imagine it is far from a plush suburb. My knowledge on my opponent is limited other than some basic information, but one can imagine that he fights angry inside of the ring. And that is always a test for a smaller guy like me. I need to use my aerial attack and use my speed to help and balance things.
*A car drives down the street as a neighbor waves his hand out the window at Avery, as Avery waves back*
Just because I may not be as hardened as someone growing up in a major city does not mean that I do not know what loss is. What pain is. What suffering is. We all deal with our own conflicts, whether they be inner or outer. I only wish the best for you and perhaps you can find that peace one day. For me? I still deal with the balance of peace and conflict. But I know better than to think that everything is rainbows and sunshine. I have had to scratch and claw to get to where I am in my career. Losing a series of title matches, it really made me focus and train harder than I have ever trained. I put forth everything I had into my training, and then some. I pushed my own boundaries past to where I thought I could even go. That is the thing about becoming the best, you even may surprise yourself.
*A car heads down the street towards Avery as its turn signal flips on. The car slowly approaches as it turns into the driveway. It is Taylor and Brooklyn. Avery turns towards them and smiles, as they start to unload the car*
We might come from different backgrounds. Different coasts. And have different upbringings. But inside of the ring, none of that matters. You are determined for your reasons, and me for mine. We can debate who wants it more; who is better. Let our actions do the talking and we will see what truly is going to happen. I know that you are going to bring everything that you have, and I will do the same. Good luck. And see you out there.
