044 * Rockets in the Sky
Scene 001 - Home of Avery Miles III - Henderson, NV - June 22nd, 2016
*Taylor and Avery arrive back at their house just as the babysitters van pulls up to the curb. Within minutes the little girl is running to throw her arms around Taylor.*
Brooklyn: “Ewww.” She turns up her little nose in disgust. “Momma needs a shower.”
*Taylor laughs letting the little girl free to run to Avery.*
Avery: “Hey little cutie”
*Avery smiles, bending over picking up the little blonde.*
Avery: “Were you good?”
Brooklyn: “Yes Daddy.” She buries her face into Avery’s shoulder and hugs his neck tightly. Taylor puts a hand to her face, her eyes welling up with tears.
Taylor: “Let’s get you ready for bed Brooky.”
*Taylor has the door open and the girl is jumping up the stairs happily. Taylor looks back to Avery as he enters, dropping both their duffle bags to the floor.
Taylor: “I’m sorry Avery... I didn’t tell her to say that... I know...”
*She can’t finish knowing how heartbreaking it is for her best friend to hear that, having lost three biological children of his own. He closes his eyes, and breathes deep.*
Avery: “No, it’s fine Tay. Honestly, I saw how much of a dad Jeremiah is not. And Brooklyn deserves much better. And you deserve much better. I think… I think it might be time that we make… we make us… known. And Brooklyn… I would be honored to be that man she can count on.”
*Taylor steps forward and puts her arms around his waist, looking into his eyes.*
Taylor: “I would like that. And despite what anyone says, us not admitting what we are publicly has nothing to do with your reputation. It's just not anyone’s business is all. It's not like we just met. We were each other's first real loves. The only one I have ever loved. I won’t let anyone push me down ever again for my choices.”
*She smiles, leaning up to kiss his cheek.*
Taylor: “As far as I’m concerned you are Brooklyn’s father and well... ever since Jeremiah signed over his rights... I was thinking...”
*She swallows hard.*
Taylor: “What if... what if you adopted her? Legally that is... If it's too hard I understand but no matter what happens with you and I, I want you to be her Daddy... for real.”
*He bites his lip, wrapping his arms around her. So much up and down over the past year. And yet, this moment… something as simple as signing a piece of paper to legally show what Avery has already been feeling.*
Avery: “Yes.”
*No further explanation needed. No long diatribe. No monologue. A simple yes. He smiles and kisses her, ready to take that next step in their rollercoaster of a journey that is reaching new heights.*
*Tears of happiness roll down her cheeks. She pulls back, holding his face in both her hands.*
Taylor: “You are a wonderful man Avery Miles. I don’t care what anyone else tries to say. To me... to that little girl up there? You are our world. You saved us and I want to save you right back.”
Avery: “Taylor Deveraux… you both saved me.”
*He tilts her chin up towards him.*
Avery: “I love you. And I would be happy to be her father… and one day… your husband.”
*Not sure her reaction, he pauses. She blushes.*
Taylor: “One day. But let's deal with the adoption first.”
*She chuckles but it's obvious in her wide blue eyes how happy she is.She walks over to a side table and opens a drawer pulling out a manilla envelope.*
Taylor: “Don’t be angry with me, but I already asked a lawyer. She said it's an easy procedure given that I already had Jer sign. The courts would want to interview you, observe you with Brook but otherwise she said given your reputation and everything, she could see it happening in two-three weeks.”
*She hands him the envelope.*
Taylor: “You can look it over while I give Brook her bath.”
*She kisses him lightly.*
Taylor: “I love you Ave. Very much.”
*She turns, walking up the stairs.*
*There is no question in his mind, he will do whatever it takes to make it happen. He pulls his phone out and the background is a picture of the three of them.
Avery: “Daddy…”
*He smiles, loving the way things might finally be turning around for him.*
Scene 002 - Civic Center Park - Palm Desert, CA - June 25th, 2016
*We open as Avery, Taylor, and Brooklyn are making their way down a grassy hill. The sun is going down as a large crowd is gathered. A stage is setup and people are spreading out blankets to catch the 4th of July Fireworks show*
Taylor: “I never understood why they did the show so early?”
Avery: “I am not sure either, but it happens to work out, because next Saturday I am double booked in Vegas!”
*They look around until Brooklyn finds a spot isolated from a lot of the other families.*
Brooklyn: “Mama, Daddy! Here!”
*Taylor smiles at hearing her new name for Avery. Brooklyn is jumping up and down until the couple get to the spot.*
Avery: “I can get used to that.”
*He smiles at Taylor, carrying a basket and she carries a large blanket.*
Avery: “I think Brooky picked out a good spot.”
*Taylor spread outs the blanket as the three of them have a seat on the blanket. The start of the fireworks show nears as a local band plays on stage. Avery reaches into the basket and pulls out some toys for her to play with.*
Avery: “You remember this place, Tay?”
*Taylor recalls her first summer here. The three of them, her Avery & Zoe sitting on a very similar checkered blanket and watching the show. It had been one of her best memories*
Taylor: “Of course I do. How could I forget.”
*Avery smiles to her*
Avery: “I meant… our first official date back then.”
*He bites his lip. She smiles up at him. Bittersweet considering a month later she would find out about her father’s embezzlement and then her mother’s death*
Taylor: “Yes. One of my few happiest memories.”
Avery: “Brooklyn, you ready for some fireworks?”
*The now three-year-old blonde looks back with a huge smile on her face*
Brooklyn: “Yeah!”
*She drops the toys and jumps at Avery, practically knocking him over.*
Avery: “Wow! You are growing fast, aren’t you? What are you… twenty? Twenty five?”
*Brooklyn giggles. *
Brooklyn: “You’re silly Daddy.”
*Taylor can’t help but smile at the exchange. The fireworks begin as the sky lighting up immediately takes focus from the three of them. Brooklyn cannot take her eyes off of the sky as Taylor leans into Avery, he wraps his arm around her*
Avery: “This is perfect Taylor. You. Me. The three of us.”
*A familiar song comes over the radio, “You Found Me” by The Fray. Avery looks over to her and nods realizing how this moment seemed the same. Finally ready to move forward with things, Avery leans in and kisses Taylor. She sighs, moving closer and responding to his kiss with her own. Her hand moves into his hair. She’s the first to pull back, leaning her forehead against his and looking deeply into his eyes*
Avery: “I think that I want to make this… make us official. I know it will likely be used against me, but I don’t care about any of that. We both reconnected at the right time, and we have helped each other in times of need.”
*Avery kisses her forehead*
Avery: “We never were able to see where things were going, but we have that opportunity now. If you would like to see where things go. The three of us.”
Taylor: “Of course I do. I want that more than anything Avery.”
*She smiles brightly. And looks at Brooklyn who is giving her parents no mind.*
Taylor: “And fuck anyone that has a problem with it.”
*Taken back for a minute, he smiles, seeing Taylor becoming comfortable in her own finally*
Avery: “Good. So I guess now we just wait for the onslaught.”
*He laughs not caring what people have to say, because at the end of the day his personal choices are his*
Taylor: “Honestly, there only seems to be one woman who cares about who you’re dating and honestly she got engaged after what? Two or three months? She can’t say or do anything to break me of how I feel about you.”
Avery: “Good. And we both know the truth of everything. So let’s forget everything else and just enjoy our time. Deal?”
*She smiles, leaning her head down on his shoulder while watching the fireworks light up the sky*
Taylor: “Deal.”
Scene 003 - SoCal Grappling Academy - San Diego, CA - June 26th, 2016
*Avery Miles III walks into the brand new academy. It has been open for just a few days, and already there has been some interest. Some local wrestlers have checked it out, and Avery knows that the local community is integral to its success. An open first week to give people the chance to try out the equipment as a gym, and use the school as a way to train into professional wrestling. In a world where MMA is quickly becoming a dominant sport, the focus on a pure wrestling school is not a main one. And there is where the SGA enters the forum. Avery flips the lights on, drops his bag, and tosses his keys into the bag. He wears an “AM3” shirt and workout shorts, it is a chance for Avery to get some work in before people begin to arrive*
Avery: The Marquee Championship… it was long the hot potato of the company. I said it from the beginning that I wanted to bring stability; and that I shall. It is important for me to live up to that. To get to this point, I had to defeat those in my way, and one of those people was my opponent at City of Sin; Candy. She took her leave from the company, and has returned. She looks fresh and ready to take on whatever challenge lay ahead of her, including this title match that Devlin Scott gave to her. She did earn it before, but then she left. I can’t argue with her talent or skill, but while others were here in NGW trying to establish themselves and to further push the company into the big time… she left. I don’t know her reasons, and we all have personal lives. Things come up; they get in the way. I know that more than most, and still…
*Avery holds his arms out to his sides*
…I am here.
*Avery reaches into his bag, and pulls out the Marquee Title. Holding it folded in his hands, he looks it over for a second. The nameplate reads “AVERY MILES III”. It reflects the overhead lights of the SGA as its luster and shine are second to none*
I don’t pick my opponents, and I take on whoever is put in front of me. Candy is the opponent chosen, and I will take her on like any other opponent that I have faced. She is far from a pushover, and she will do everything in her power to overcome her shortcomings last time that we faced off. The difference this time?
*He holds the title up*
I am the Champion… and she is coming for me. She had her chance before, and came up short. I know that in the finals I lost to my brother; but I earned my redemption before he had to take leave of his own. So I get it, Candy. I have no ill feelings about you, nor do I think that you are not deserving of a place in this company. If anything, I saw you, Levi, and myself as the three to lead this specific division; and yet, here we are.
*Avery places the title on top of the back, and smiles back into the camera*
They say that a sin is an immoral act or transgression. Living in this city for a couple of months now, I am more than aware of the temptation that it has. The temptation of flesh, greed, and gluttony. Seeing gold so close that you can see your reflection in it… it can sure be tempting to let it blind you. But I know better than to succumb to the visual stimulation of the gold. I won’t allow you to simply come in here and take it away from me. No. No. No. But I know better than to think that you don’t believe yourself deserving of it. I hope that the respect that we shared before… that it will carry on to this match. I respect you Candy, and I know that you had some of the best training out there. In the same sense, I know that the thought of gold being at someone’s fingertips can allow them to steer off of the path. Let this match be a contest of talent, skill, heart, and passion… because any other test would be unbecoming of either of us.
*Avery lays back on the weight bench and places both hands on the bar, ready to lift the weight*
I wish you only the best Candy. It is going to take that, and then some, to take this title from me. I have reached this goal in my career, and it won’t be so easy to let it go. Eight more days, Candy. And we make history.
