002 * The Good Guy
Scene 001 - Palm Springs International Airport - Palm Springs, CA - April 28th, 2016
On television and in movies there is a good guy, and there is a bad guy. The plot is usually the same; good guy is someone that we can root for and the bad guy is hated. The good guy allows for some good things to happen, builds himself up, but at the peak of success we see the bad guy get the better of him. In Empire Strikes Back, Luke is no match for Vader and gets his right hand cut off. Another example for those that enjoy comics would be the Thomas Jane version of The Punisher, as we see Frank Castle’s whole family slaughtered in front of him. In the end, the good guy or anti-hero wins or gets his revenge. Everything might not be the best as losing body parts or people close to you is never worth any amount of satisfaction, but these characters play their role. Life imitates art quite often and many times we fill these roles. It could be the climbing an uphill battle, fighting a David and Goliath style war, or just pushing through the odds that are stacked against you.
*Avery Miles III is at the Palm Springs International Airport waiting for his flight to Las Vegas. He is joined by his fiancee and mother-to-be Alycia Morgan. They are flying out for an upcoming booking that Avery has in Vegas. Bags are packed; carry-ons are tagged. They have this whole thing down to a science*
Just like in the movies, we all play our roles. Some of us are the heroes; others are the villains. From day one I have wanted to be that hero, whether or not I am seen as that or seen as the favorite. Honor and respect are important virtues to my, and they are how I live my life. I have been matched up against a series of different talents; men, women, new, experienced, young, old, big, small. I know that opponents come in all shapes and sizes, but the constant remains is me wanting to be that hero. For every little boy and girl that attends the show and begs their parents to buy a shirt of their favorite star, I want to make sure that they have an experience like no nothing. They are why we are here. And I want to be their hero.
*Avery and Alycia gathers their things as a voice over the PA System announces that their flight is now boarding*
Being good is not the easy way to do things; it can be a challenge. It is easy to cheat and get a win. It is easy to get under the skin of the fans and make them hate you. It is easy to win and live it up, or to lose and blame others. When you are a good guy, you have to live and die by what you do. If you win, respect your opponent. If you lose, be prepared to get ridiculed and make sure that you do better next time. The life of a good guy is not an easy one. Keeping the fans happy; making sure to do the right thing when people spit in your face. But it is a choice that I made from the beginning and one that remains true. I am a good guy because that is WHO I am.
*Avery and Alycia head towards their gate and they board the plane for Las Vegas*
Scene 002 - SoCal Grappling Arts Center - San Diego, CA - Summer 2011 - FLASHBACK
*A young Avery Miles III is inside of the ring with a man easily fifteen plus years his elder. The man is not quite in shape, unless portly is a shape. The two men seem to be more circling inside of the ring instead of the normal back and forth sparring.*
Old Man: Bad guys get heat. Good guys get pop. Understand that, Sally?
*Avery shakes his head, tired of being called Sally.*
Old Man: A good way to get the ground into it… hand chops. Slap each other in the chest. The fans will boo him, and they will cheer for you. So… do it!
*With that, the larger man steps forward and wails with an open hand palm to the chest of Avery leaving an instant red spot. A couple of guys around the gym groan as they can see the older man take a bit of leeway with the younger talent. Avery pushes a foot back to stop the momentum as he as caught off guard. He holds his chest and looks at the Old Man, who looks quite entertained.*
Old Man: Your turn, Sally!
*Avery steps forward and hits a chop to the big man but it barely does anything. The large man lays into Avery a second time, leaving an even larger red spot. Avery tries a second time, and this time the big man moves a bit but slides right foot back to catch himself*
Old Man: Getting better!
*For the third chop, the big man moves in to chop, but Avery is able to stop him mid motion with a chop, a second chop, and a third chop sending the big man stumbling backwards. With that the big man is not pleased and charges forward only to be taken down with a standing dropkick from Miles. The Old Man is pleased and stands up, clapping*
Old Man: Bravo! There you go, kid! That is what I wanted. Show that heart. Get the fans behind you! Be the hero that they need you to be! The underdog; they will cheer and root for you!
*Avery stands back to his feet as he looks around to the handful of people inside of the gym, and their eyes are all focused on him*
Scene 003 - McCarran International Airport - Las Vegas, Nevada, CA - April 28th, 2016
*Avery and Alycia are waiting for the service to pick them up. Deciding to make use of the time, Avery pulls out his phone and hits record. They both of them are sitting on a bench near the pickup area. There is some traffic, both foot and automotive, all over but they are down the pickup area enough to avoid it. It is a rather comfortable day and they are enjoying the weather. Alycia is dressed in a pair of comfortable jeans with an ‘AMsquared’ tank top and sneakers; Avery is wearing a black ‘AM3’ shirt, jeans, and black sneakers.*
I was able to pick up a win on Stop One, but unfortunately I was simply out wrestled last show. It looks like I get to help set the pace for the next show against “The Natural” Mike Jamison. We open the show and get the crowd hyped for the rest of the card. Many people feel that being in the opening match is a slight, but I like getting out there and setting the bar high for the rest of the night. It allows me breathing room to do what I do, put on a show, and to earn a spot up the card. Now, I am speaking for myself and not for Mr. Jamison. Doing some scouting on him and going back to watch the first two stops of this tour, we see that he did not win at the first stop but he managed to pull off one heck of a counter and beat Mark Storm at Stop Two. The same Mark Storm that is determined to be recognized globally and has held and fought for titles. The very same Mark Storm that I beat in my home promotion to earn a title shot there. It looks like we are both one and one here in Texas and are looking to get over the five hundred mark.
Doing some research on you, I learned that you are from Cleveland, Ohio; the base operations for the company that I find my home with. And you have a strong technical style; I might be a bit more of the aerial assault but I find myself relying on technical prowess. So despite our age difference, there are some close parallels here. We might be similar in these ways, but we also differ in other ways. I want to do things the right way, I want to be honorable. You? You thrive no disrespect. Name-calling. Putting others down. You are the villain here, and you might think that you got one up on me… in the end the hero saves the day. I will save the fans from having to see someone like you walk away winner. I will give them someone to cheer for; a friendly face to get behind. Now I am not some squeaky clean good guy, that is not reality. I might use some language. I might have some attitude. I might get riled up. But what I do? I do it for the fans. I do it for them. I do it to give them their money’s worth. I do it to give them a role model to look up to. And I do it to show that even they can live up to their own dreams in life and do what they love.
I was in their position once, looking for an escape. I was looking for a hero. Looking for someone to light my path through the darkness. I came through that fog and stepped into the spotlight. And here I am, ready to leave for those that want their hero. Play up your bad guy role, Jamison; this story ends just as it should… with me winning. You can do whatever you think will be enough to beat me, but it won’t be. You are just going to have to accept losing because it is the only option for you. Stop Three is the stop in which Avery Miles III goes from someone that most people do not know… to becoming recognized in the company, across Texas, and in this industry.
Bring everything that you have, Mike. You are going to need it. I know to watch out for underhanded tricks and to be on guard. This match is going to be a great start to the show, and it is because everyone will soon learn that Avery Miles III is not meant to be the underdog… but to lead the company from the top. I am a leader and someone willing to put it all out there. I back my words, and in time everyone will see that I mean what I say.
