The scene opens with Marcus Adams, Karin's trainer and CJ’s cousin, in the ring at the wrestling school/gym with NGW Five Lakes Champion, Karin Jasper. Charles and Karin had arrived at the gym around 10:00AM and had worked out with IPW Heavyweight Champion, Jacob Daniels, before Karin and Marcus began her training for the day. Now, the session is near its end.
Marcus: “I'd say you're coming along fine with learning a few new things here lately. Remember that just because you are a champ, that doesn't mean you don't still have room to grow and improve in some areas.”
The rookie champion nods her head, taking a few deep breaths. She’s been working harder than ever to prepare for what she’s called the biggest match of her career so far.
Karin: “I never want to stop learning, honestly. I don’t feel invincible, and I know eventually one day, someone is going to have my number, but it won’t be the night before my wedding. There’s no way.”
Jasper looks over Marcus’ shoulder and see’s her fiance, Charles James laughing with another trainee outside the ring, sharing his wisdom. She looks back at Marcus and speaks softly.
Karin: “Hey, Marcus, are we done for the day? I wanted to get some sparring in with Charles to show him what I’ve got.”
Marcus looks over to CJ and then nods at Karin.
Marcus: “Yeah, we're good here for the day. I'll go switch out with C and let y'all tango a little bit. Just keep it clean, okay?”
He pats KJ on the shoulder, laughing at his own joke.
Karin: “You don’t have to worry about me keeping it clean, he’s the one you have to worry about.”
Karin laughs and shouts over Marcus’ shoulder.
Karin: “Hey, DEAD EYE...I’m calling you out. Get your handsome behind in here.”
Charles looks up and raises an eyebrow.
CJ: “YOU callin’ ME out?! I know I ain't just hear that!”
He slides under the bottom rope and into the ring. He slowly makes his way over, leaning down a little closer to the woman he is going to marry in three days.
CJ: “I know you didn't just do that for real, huh?”
Karin: “I did it...for real.”
After a productive training session, Karin is happy to be up close and personal with her fiance, especially in this atmosphere, the atmosphere he introduced her to. Knowing it wouldn’t be possible without him, the usually serious rookie is letting her guard down just a few days away from the biggest day of their lives. She wants to have fun, and doesn’t worry about who may see her ‘not taking it seriously’, because she knows she gives 100 % every session.
Karin: “Do you want to light spar with me? Make sure I’m doing everything right? Oh, can you wear an Avery mask? That would make it easier for me to kick you in the face then.”
CJ: “So, you wanna kick me in the face, huh? That ain't even right. I told you that you'd end up wanting to kick me...just didn't think it'd be this soon.”
He plays back. The two have sparred a good amount of time in the few months she has been training. At times, the sessions have been intense, and others a little lighter. This playful sparring is a bit different, but it is fitting at the same time as the two have been training even harder than usual with their title matches approaching in two days.
CJ: “You wanna spar, tho? I'ma say like Lloyd then, ‘Get it, shawty!’”
Karin: “Just a light spar, I don’t want to hurt you before our wedding. I know you bruise easy...lightskin…”
She puts her head down, and a hand over her mouth to mask her smile. He nods with a bit of a smirk.
CJ: “I gotchu. First, it was the picture on Twitter last night, so you think you some kinda comedian nah.”
He waves two fingers at her like to say “come on.” Without warning, Karin backs against the rope, pushing herself off and runs towards him. He grabs her as she reaches him, tossing her a few feet into the air, she shrieks but he catches her and nearly slams her to the mat for a powerbomb but instead lifts her up to where her legs are around his neck in that position.
Karin: “Hey! Was that some kind of payback? What if you would have dropped me!?”
CJ: “Just making sure you remember my counter ability and awareness...and have I ever dropped...”
Before he can finish talking, Karin leans back and swings her arms out to pull all her weight back. She spins him forward with a flying head scissors. CJ hits the mat back-first as KJ lands comfortably on all-fours, popping right back up.
CJ: “And what was that, babe?”
Karin: “Oh...just me reminding you that I’ve come out of nowhere my entire career, so never take it easy around me.”
The rookie stands up, smiling and offers her hand to CJ to help him up, as CJ takes her hand, she twists his wrist, and quickly moves behind him as he’s still on his knees. She wraps both arms around his head and neck, locking in a sleeper hold.
Karin: “Lesson two, I’m learning new moves everyday, so you always need to be prepared. Tap out, babe.”
CJ: “...or nah.”
He smiles to himself but only for a moment as KJ locks the sleeper in tighter. As he struggles, he places his right hand, palm-down, on the mat. He does the same with his lift. In one movement, he uses his planted foot and hands to push up. This makes both stand a little. He leaps up and over her head with a modified Asai DDT. Both lay on the mat for a moment.
CJ is the first to get to a knee, as he crawls over to KJ and lifts her head from the mat, brushing the hair out of her face. Jasper blinks a few times, realizing it’s her fiance holding her head and smiles before wincing.
Karin: “I’ve never seen that move before...ouch.”
He stands back up to his feet, walking back over to Karin. He offers her a hand.
CJ: “Sorry. I know this is a light spar, but I wasn't aboutsta tap, babe.”
As he goes to help her up, KJ pulls herself the rest of the way back up but leaps behind him with a crucifix pin, and after shouting 1, 2 out loud, she breaks the pin, rolling out and onto her knees.
Karin: “Okay, okay, truce! I don’t want to really hurt you. I actually wanted you to join me in the ring for a specific reason.”
Karin stands to her feet, adjusting the ‘O.A.F’ shirt she’s wearing.
Karin: “You taught me the Pele, and that’s the move that beat Tee Voland when otherwise I probably would have lost because of my ankle. I need something else from you, a move that could really help me against Avery if things get tough.”
CJ: “Okay, I guess Marc wasn't joking when he said you really are learning stuff all the time. Anything specific you had in mind?”
Karin: “Something quick, that I could really pull off in a tight situation. It’s hard to explain, but you know how the Pele kind of just comes out of nowhere? I want something similar, something that could catch Avery off guard.”
He thinks for a moment, looking at his fiancée to consider what may be best for her to use at a moment’s notice but also something that can be used in a multitude of different situations. He walks to the edge of the ring.
CJ: “Hey, Darren. You mind coming in here for a moment so I can show Karin a new move right quick?”
Darren: “Yeah, boss. Sure thing.”
The young trainee of the school steps into the ring, and CJ whispers to him what he is planning to do. The trainee nods.
Darren: “What do I need to do?”
CJ: “Well, I'll show her on you and she'll practice a few times. Ready, babe?”
Karin: “Mmmhm. I’m ready.”
Karin steps back into a corner, paying attention intently to the new move she’s about to be taught. The trainee stands in the center of the ring.
CJ: “Okay, first I'll just show you this from a running position because it's the most common. Ready, Darren?”
The trainee nods as CJ takes a few steps back and charges. He leaps into the air and wraps his left arm around the head of the trainee in a reverse bulldog position. As he goes just beyond his head, he leans all of his weight back, pulling the young man with him to complete a jumping spike DDT. He then stands up, helping the trainee up, too. He looks over to the attentive rookie, who looks like she was taking mental notes of the sequence.
CJ: “Wanna give it a try, babe?”
Karin: “Yeah, I think I’ve got it.”
She puts a finger to her chin, moving her lips slowly, talking herself over the move. The trainee walks to the middle of the ring as Karin runs, and pulls off the move the exact same way that CJ had pulled it off. She excitedly stands up after, helping the trainee up before turning her attention to CJ.
Karin: “I felt like I pulled that off okay, did I mess it up at all or was it good?”
CJ: “That was very well-executed. So, like I said, that's one way you can pull it off. You can springboard into it, which makes it even more powerful. You can also use it as a counter. Darren is gonna lift you for a suplex. Let's see if you can pull off the reversal, okay?”
Karin: “Okay. So I’m doing the same move, just out of a suplex instead of running, right?”
KJ looks at Darren and CJ for clarification.
CJ: “Yes. He's gonna lift you up for the suplex; then, you reverse into the spike in mid-air, about the point where you would lean back from the running position. Got it?”
Karin: “Got it. I think.”
She laughs and gives herself up to Darren who lifts the tiny rookie for a suplex. He holds her up in the air for numerous seconds easily until KJ kicks her legs. He sits her feet back down on the mat and goes to lift her again and as he gets her halfway up, she counters the move and hits the spike DDT and then quickly presses her chest to his and hooks one of his legs as CJ counts a 3 count. Karin then rolls off of the trainee, standing up and immediately wrapping her arms around CJ for a hug. Maybe it's Saturday and Sunday fast approaching, but her mood the entire day has been one of not only excitement, but also reflection. She whispers to him as she holds him for the hug.
Karin: “We’re BOTH winning our matches Saturday, okay? And Sunday...you and I become US. Nothing can ruin it, right?”
He shakes his head and then gives her a kiss.
CJ: “Nothing can. We GOTS this and this will be our weekend, no doubt. With all of this prep and the two of us working together, no one is gonna stop us. Champs one night, then husband and wife the next morning.”
Karin pulls away, looking up at CJ who has the cheesiest, most genuine grin across his face.
Karin: “I can’t wait, but go get ready for your flight, babe. I need to clean up and get myself ready too. I have another business meeting, and then I’m going to get home to Princess and have mommy, puppy time while you’re gone. Ice cream and dog treats will be involved, be jealous.”
CJ: “Oh, I'm jealous cuz you know I been away more than you lately, so you been tryna steal my shine with Princess. Bad look, babe.”
He gives her a side eye.
Karin: “Don’t be jealous that she loves me more. I still love you the most.”
Karin laughs as CJ leans in trying to do his famous tickle scare, but Jasper slides out of the ring.
Karin: “Too slow, someone’s getting old already. Text me when you land, babe. I really need to get going or I’m going to miss this meeting. Love you!”
She’s walking backwards towards the locker area to change, keeping her eyes on him. He speaks with his voice a little raised for her to hear him as she walks away.
CJ: “Love you, too, but you better make sure you have no meetings tomorrow. You have plans.”
As she disappears, he heads to his office to grab his things before he takes a shower to head to Atlantic City to watch his sister, Kat Jones, wrestle later.
