[We open as Hayden Phoenix is sparring in a ring with an unknown competitor. We see various strikes; kicks and punches. Hayden slides behind the opponent and drives him back with a belly-to-back suplex. Hayden quickly gets up to his feet as the other man slowly pulls himself up with the use of the ropes. As the man reaches his feet, he turns only to be caught with a Phoenix Effect (Superkick) to the jaw sending him flying over the top rope. As Hayden sees this happening, we hear clapping coming from off of camera. Hayden spins around to the doorway as we see Kiana Pearson enter the room]
Hayden: Hey! You came!
Kiana: I told you I was coming, I just didn’t tell you when.
[The ‘Compton Princess’ smirks as she steps closer to the ring. Kiana, also looks ready to work out if need be. She stops in front of Hayden and scans him up and down, her eyes finally resting on his knee that has a large brace on it.]
Kiana: So I really only saw that kick, which was impressive by the way. How’s the knee feeling now that you’re actually wrestling on it? And you better be honest to me, because if I find out you’re lying...I’ll cut off your hair.
[Kiana can’t hold back a laugh.]
Hayden: Yeah, it’s pretty good. I made sure to work it out for a bit first. I know better than to start from a cold knee. Stretches. The usual. I mean, I am sure that it will be sore. But an ice bath will be helpful there. And thanks. I haven’t hit that kick in awhile. I might have some more working out to finish up before I leave here. You interested in staying? Maybe you can pickup a thing or two?
Kiana: Am I interested in staying? Did you really just ask that? You know I’m trying to learn a few things myself. I know I talk a big game but I’m still only one match in. Since you’re so old and beat up, there has to be a few tricks you can teach me.
[Kiana walks up to the man that Hayden was sparring with as he finally gets up from the floor slowly. She rests a hand on his shoulder, looking him straight in the eyes.]
Kiana: Homie, you got knocked the f out!
[The man looks upset, his face flushes red with anger and he immediately pushes Kiana back and swings at her. Kiana ducks and then sweeps the man’s legs, dropping him to his back again on the floor. She puts her Under Armour sneaker on his chest while pointing down at him.]
Kiana: I’m gonna let you get up and walk out of here with whatever bit of dignity you have left. If you EVER try that mess on me again, I can promise you that you won’t be so lucky.
[She steps off his chest and lightly kicks at his side, as the man rolls over and eyes both Hayden and Kiana up. Kiana flips her hair, rolling her eyes, as she turns back to Hayden.]
Kiana: Sorry, had to take out the trash. What’s up?
[Hayden shakes his head and laughs a bit. He isn’t sure to be pissed that she kicked the crap out of his sparring partner, or find it funny that she kicked the crap out of his sparring partner. He makes his way to the ropes, sits on the middle rope, and spreads the middle and top ropes inviting her into the ring]
Hayden: Wow. Such a big dog. Come on in then, lady. Let’s see what you got. You come at me a bit, and maybe you can learn a thing or two about how to stop people’s defenses.
[Kiana grabs two bottles of water from her gym bag, and pulls her hair into a ponytail before walking up to the ring. She places the waters on the ring apron in the corner and her hands on the ring mat from the outside, nodding her head.]
Kiana: Yeah, I can do this. Let’s go.
[Kiana pulls herself up and slides into the ring. She walks around it, taking time to feel it out. Finally, she grabs the top rope with both manicured hands, pulling on it.]
Kiana: These ropes feel hard. How old is this gym?
Hayden: Well it has been here since maybe the 30’s or 40’s. It was a boxing gym, and they have begun to share it across various sparring sports since the 90’s and the rise of professional wrestling. I prefer to train a bit more old school. Amenities are something that hotels have, not gyms. I need a ring, a partner, some equipment, and a water fountain. I don’t need televisions or Wi-Fi, or any of that. I know that when it comes to you and me hanging out I might be as sweet as sugar, but inside of the ring I am all business. I do not want you to underestimate my work ethic. I just want us to be on the same page. Fair?
Kiana: I’m gonna keep it real, that is totally opposite of me. I need Wi-Fi so I can tweet about how bad I whoop you after I do.
[She laughs.]
Kiana: I don’t drink from water fountains because the water tastes metal-y. And this place is too quiet, so tv’s would be dope, but hey, I can do things your way this once, I guess. Next time we’re going to a newer gym.
[She confidently walks up to Hayden, smirking in his face. She then places both hands on his chest and playfully pushes him.]
Kiana: Oooops, I think I pushed you.
Hayden: Funny. You think that you can get away with being cute… ain’t going to happen. Let’s do this. You come at me. Give me what you got. And I will show you.
[Kiana comes at him, fakes a right, and targets Hayden with a left. He catches it, twists her arm, and flips her onto her back]
Hayden: See? You gotta be prepared to counter someone’s own counter or dodge!
[Kiana slowly sits up on the mat, shaking her head.]
Kiana: That’s how we’re doing things? I was taking it easy on you since you have a robo leg, but I’m done playing nice.
[She stands up to both feet, a new look of focus in her eyes as she circles around him, but notices his eyes are trained on her, with a focus she’s never seen in him during their time together in the last two weeks. She takes a step back, taking in and then letting out a deep breath.]
Kiana: Man, you really don’t play when it comes to this stuff. Okay, I have to learn to counter stuff. Got it. Try something on me. Lemme see if I have it down.
Hayden: Robo leg? Alright. I got you.
[He shakes his head again. Hayden is usually a man of serious work ethic, but having Kiana there added a bit of fun to it. Something that Hayden did not have in a long time. After the breakup with his former girlfriend, Isabella, at the height of his title reign followed by losing the title and injuring his knee… things have not been “fun” for a long time. But the last two weeks were simply the best for the former Five Lakes Champion. Hayden closed his stance a bit and leads into Kiana looking to grab her for a DDT, but she is able to slip out of it. As she does, she is quick to sweep his “robo leg” out from under him as he hits the mat hard on his back and grimaces in pain. She realizes what she just did as she drops down to her knees to check on him]
Kiana: Hay! I am so-
[Before she could finish, he grabbed her arm and locked in an armbar for a couple of seconds before releasing her arm]
Hayden: See? I got you.
[Kiana pulls the arm that was trapped a minute ago in, rubbing it slowly with a look of surprise on her face.]
Kiana: I was just checking to make sure I didn’t hurt you, and you tricked me. You ‘ole deceiving a** Hay Hay.
[She laughs]
Kiana: I really just called you Hay Hay. What the HAY has gotten into me?
[Hayden laughs a bit as he pops up to his feet. He grabs her around the waist and lifts her up. She pops up quickly as he kisses her arm]
Hayden: Some lessons and learned hard, but I just wanted to show you. I am sorry if I hurt you. I am sure that you will get me later for it. I am not sure how much of my matches you have seen, but I was more worried about being at one hundred percent due to much of my arsenal involving my legs. Have you learned how to step up into an enziguri yet? It’s one of the first finishers I tended to gravitate more.
[He rubs her arm for a few more seconds just to make sure that she is okay]
Kiana: A what? I have no idea what you just said, let alone what it is. I’ve had basic training, and even some more advanced stuff, but I’m still learning. If this was basketball I would be the one teaching you the terminology, but I’m down to learn whatever.
[Kiana laughs as Hayden’s eyes meet her’s, confused as to why she’s laughing.]
Kiana: It’s funny that you’re so worried about my arm, I’m good. That weak pressure you put on? I could get out of that in my sleep.
[Obviously fabricating the truth, she again lets out a round of laughter as Hayden pulls his hand back from her arm.]
Kiana: What I honestly wanna do is shock the world. Think about it, everyone has been throwing it in my face that I only have a contract because I’m CJ’s ex wife. That’s why I got a contract, and that’s why I have this title opportunity. They haven’t even put two and two together that I earned this title match by beating two people at one time in my first match. If teaching me an enzi-whatever it is will help shut people up, I’m down.
Hayden: Without getting too technical into it, it is a move that quite a few people use. If you are accustomed to using your legs for striking it may come second nature. An easy way to use it is as a counter. Say you kick me, and I catch your leg. If you can, make the jump and catch your opposite foot to the back of my head. It’s a great way to counter someone catching your foot. As I said in the beginning; counter their counter or block. Why don’t you go ahead and try to kick me, and we can try it?
Kiana: If I give you a concussion or something, just remember you asked for it because I might not hit your back, I might aim a little high and hit your head.
[Kiana laughs and looks at Hayden for a moment. Taking the time to think things through, she goes for a kick to his stomach. He grabs her leg, blocking the attempt. She jumps a couple of steps to move in closer]
Hayden: Remember, quickness is your ally here. I will give you the slide this time. But you can’t do that little hoppy shit inside of the ring.
[She jumps up and tries to connect with the back of his head but he knows it is coming and is able to drop down sending her spinning forward to the mat]
Kiana: Hey! Not fair! You knew it was coming.
Hayden: You think I will LET you kick me in the head? But good job. Keep practicing that and maybe you can show the haters what KiKi is really made of.
[Hayden back up to his feet as he reaches an arm down to pull her back up, but as he does, she pulls him down to the mat in a pin, and begins shouting out loud a count.]
Kiana: One, two…
[Hayden is able to use the difference in weight and size to roll her onto her back as he is on top of her. He holds her shoulders down as he counts]
Hayden: One! Two! Three! Ding! Ding! Ding! See, I told you that I work hard.
[He laughs to himself and winks at her]
Kiana: That wasn’t even right. I was all excited that I was about to pin you and then you pinned me.
[She looks up at him as she’s still on her back with him on top of her.]
Kiana: You could keep sitting here but after a minute I’m not going to be able to breathe and that wouldn’t be a good thing.
[She laughs, pushing up at him to get him off of her.]
Hayden: Oh, sorry!
[He quickly backs off and pops back up to his feet. He offers an arm again, but this time braces himself to be pulled down again. Kiana takes his hand and is pulled to her feet.]
Hayden: Sorry to go hard at you; I don’t like losing. I appreciate you getting into the ring with me. I haven’t helped anyone train in a long time and it feels good. Since Isabella left the company I haven’t had anyone to really associate with. A short time I tried to get close with Carmine, Charles, and Avery… but that went to shit. And for whatever reason Carmine and Avery side with him. At this point I just want to get past it, you know? I am done and over it at this point. I think that I got the lucky side of things. I got this great thing going with you. And I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
[Hayden leans up against the ropes as we swiped one of her water bottles and took a drink]
Kiana: You know I have to charge you like, ten bucks for that bottle of water right?
[Hayden nearly spits the water out, as some dribbles down his chin. Kiana shakes her head.]
Kiana: You are so gullible, it’s hilarious, but nah, that bottle’s on me. Thanks for the help, I know I have a way to go before I’m anywhere near your level, or CJ’s, or Avery or anyone but hey, while I’m learning, I’ll use whatever else I have to keep my name at the top. If I’m not the best wrestler, I’m gonna be the best talker. If someone out talks me, I’ll drop some photoshoot pictures and steal the attention back. It’s all about keeping yourself relevant, at least that’s what my primary trainer taught me.
Hayden: I am not so sure about trainer’s today. I learned how to put forth all of my energy. Give everything I had. Leave it all out there in the ring. It’s not about photoshoots. Or fame. Or glamour. I joined this because I love it. I would do it for peanuts. I am lucky enough to make a damn good living doing it. I mean, jetting around to spend time with you is not free by any means. But I have the ability to do so. Maybe we can spend more time together and you can let me show you how I was trained. I can show you some old school knowledge. And maybe you can show me… what’s it called? Snap...chat?
Kiana: You can’t say it like that with the pause though, it isn’t snap….wait….wait...chat. It’s Snapchat. And speak for yourself, I know you love wrestling, but for me, I do want the fame and I do want the money. At least I’m honest about it, right?
[She places her hands on her hips as she stares at him, wondering if he’s about to rip her a new one for being honest about her motivations at this point.]
Hayden: I guess I can’t hate on you. But maybe you’d benefit from some old school? You want to win, right?
[She nods.]
Hayden: Well sometimes it takes hard work and some tricks up your sleeve to do so. I know that you give it all that you got. I am sure that the money and the glamorous life of one KiKi Pearson will come. But why not be the best that Indy Pro has to give? And to boot, throw it in the face of Charles that you CAN bring it. Right?
Kiana: Not just throw it in his face, but everyone’s face who has been trying to downplay what I can do. I know I haven’t been the most impressive today, but I’m an athlete, I’ll get there soon enough. Just gimme a little time, okay?
Hayden: No problem. If you want some lessons, no problem. Just let me know. I think that we are good here today. I need to shower up and change. It’s still not too late if you don’t mind me taking you out to dinner. Your choice. I am buying.
[She purses her lips together in a closed mouth smirk, nodding.]
Kiana: You will never see me turn down a free meal, just saying. You might even have to throw in dessert to make up for the arm thing and for pinning me because I hate to lose too. Not to mention you have to gimme like, at least two hours to get ready. If that sounds good to you, you’ve got a date.
Hayden: Sounds good. I am staying at the Hilton downtown. Nothing fancy, but I will be in room 132. You just call me when you are ready and I can either pick you up or you can meet me at the room. Or… I am not sure what your plans are. If you haven’t got a room yet, you can stay with me and I can just watch whatever boring shows are on the television while you take the bathroom and get ready. Your call.
[Kiana laughs, and points at Hayden who looks confused.]
Kiana: You really are trying to get fresh right now! You tried to just slip in that little part, talking about I could stay with you if I didn’t have a room!
[Luckily for Hayden, no one else is in the gym because KiKi wasn’t quiet at all.]
Kiana: That was too funny! But nah, I already got a room...at the same Hilton. What happened, you looked up what hotel I was staying at and tried to get like me?
[Hayden turns a bit blush as he chuckles to remove the awkwardness]
Hayden: I was just trying to be nice and offer. And no, it’s where I’ve stayed a couple of times now. I’ll call a taxi and we can ride there together. And when you are ready, just call me and we will grab some dinner.
Kiana: Forget the taxi, is that how you got here?
[Without waiting for a response, she continues.]
Kiana: I have a rental I drove here. I can give you a ride back to the hotel, we can get ready, and then you can buy me dinner, a drink, and dessert. Am I asking for too much?
Hayden: Nope. Why are we waiting? You lead the way.
[With that, both Hayden and Kiana gathered their things and headed out of the gym as the metal door clanged hard as it shut.]
Hayden: Hey! You came!
Kiana: I told you I was coming, I just didn’t tell you when.
