[At What Cost?]
[AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA]
[8:45 PM on Tuesday, July 26th, 2016]
This is it, I’m done for. As I lie on the mat in the middle of the ring, my whole body feels completely numb. I can taste blood and I’m not sure if it’s from an internal injury or if it’s from the blood trickling from my head down to my face. Each deep breath I take feels like forever as I stare up into the bright lights of the arena. This is it, I can’t move and Blyss is going to end it, she’s going to end me. My eyes scan over to the corner and I see her climbing the turnbuckle and I know that she’s going to hit me with the Blyzzard, her patented Shooting Star Press. As she slowly climbs I close my eyes and take a deep breath as I try to brace my body for my impending doom. I see nothing but darkness and I hear nothing; I can’t hear Blyss, the crowd or the referee. I’m just stuck here on the mat, spinning in circles in darkness with my only comfort is that buzzing sound you get in your ears.
But suddenly everything stops and with my eyes still closed, I see Ash, screaming at me, ‘Gavin! Get up!’ For one last second, the numbness in my body goes away and I open my eyes to see Blyss leaping off of the top ropes, going for a shooting star press. In a last ditch effort, I kip up just enough to hook my arms around Blyss head while she’s in mid-air and I drive her skull into the mat. The Crowning… I hit it, I somehow hit it. This is it. Pin her Gavin, fucking pin her! I muster up some strength to throw myself over Blyss and the referee begins the count.
One!
Two!
Three!!!
The buzzing in my head is gone and I can hear the bell ring three times and fireworks shooting off around the arena as my theme song plays over the PA system. I roll off of Blyss and try to stand up but I collapse back down onto the mat. I did it, I won… But at what cost? Lying here, unable to stand up as the fans cheer on both Blyss and I for our efforts, I raise my hand in the air. I glance over to my left to look at Blyss and she’s looking back at me, her face still covered in her own blood from earlier, and she has a blank expression on her face which causes my heart sinks. Contrary to what people might think, I still care about Blyss and she’s one of my great friends who’s taught me so much, not just in wrestling. I begin to crawl towards her at what feels like a snail's pace. One I make it to Blyss, I grasp her hand with mine and keep my eyes on focused on her still blank stare.
Gavin Grimes: “Blyss… You might not have ever been champion in IWF but you showed tonight that you’re the best wrestler this company has ever seen. Thank you for pushing me to my brink. You might have been the one who got pinned tonight but you didn’t lose, you fucking didn’t. You won. We both won.”
She doesn’t respond but she continues to stare back at me and I can see a hint of sadness in her eyes and I can’t help but hope she ends up okay after tonight. As we both lie there on the mat, I raise her hand in the air, which she doesn’t resist, and the crowd roars. As I hold her hand up, a group of EMT’s grab us and pull us away and I let go of Blyss’ hand as her green eyes don’t leave my sight and continue to look at me with that same look from before.
The EMT’s pull me out of the ring and try to put me on a stretcher but I shove them off and then collapse to my knees, still unable to walk. I can’t help it, I have to make sure Blyss is going to be alright. I start to crawl on my hands and knees when I feel a warm hand on my shoulder and I hear Ash’s familiar voice.
Ashleigh Grimes: “Come on Gav, I got you.”
I look up at Ash and I force a weak smile before I look up and see Blyss being wheel up the ramp on a stretcher. I try to stand up on my own again but I can’t.
Gavin Grimes: “I need… I need to make sure Blyss is okay.”
Ashleigh Grimes: “She’s fine, Gavin, she’s being taken care of, which is what you need also. Let’s get you to the back, please?”
Ash pulls me up with her hand that isn’t broken and I throw my arm around her shoulder. She’s right, Blyss needs medical attention and I do too.
Gavin Grimes: “Ash… You should’ve seen the look on her face. I just feel… Responsible.”
Ash shakes her head and rolls her eyes.
Ashleigh Grimes: “Forget Blyss right now and worry about her later. Let’s get you help first right now.”
I sigh and nod my head reluctantly as I gingerly walk up the ramp under the help of Ashleigh and now another EMT who just grabbed my other arm. I just fight the hardest fight of my life and I won. I’ll get the hype and the congratulations from everyone off of this accomplishment… Off of this win over the greatest IWF competitor I’ve ever seen. I beat Blyss… But at what cost?

[Same Old War]
[Las Vegas, Nevad]
[3:00 AM on July 28th, 2016]
The scene opens up to Gavin Grimes sitting down on the edge of the rooftop of the apartments that he and Ash live in. He’s looking up at the clear night sky that’s full of what seems like a million stars. As he keeps his focus up on the stars, he begins to talk.
Gavin Grimes: “My whole life, I’ve been fighting the same old war. We all have our demons and we all battle them in different ways. The way I’ve battled my demons, this war, is to keep on fighting; whether that be physical or mental, I’ve always had a never say die, never back down attitude. No matter how many times someone shoved me face down into the dirt, I would be right back in their face, telling them to shove me back down again. Even when my world was turned upside down and the universe was falling down on my head, I kept fighting on.”
“When you have to scrap, claw and fight for everything in your life, some people tend to turn their nose at you and look down at you. Take Sasha Foote, for example; she called me a lifelong screw up. Let me ask you, Sasha, what makes me a lifelong screw up? Was it my verbally and physically abusive parents that made me that? Because when I was in high school, I was on every varsity team you could think of and had almost a 4.0 GPA but it still wasn’t enough for them. Was the fact that they kicked me out into the streets and I made my way to Vegas before having to live off of low end jobs and living in slum apartments that I could never pay the rent for. Is that what makes me a lifelong low life?”
Still sitting on the side of the building, Gavin turns and faces the camera.
Gavin Grimes: “You can’t answer it, can you? It’s because everything about my life has been a fight and I’ve never backed down from it, I’ve faced it head on. It’s why I’ve accepted every challenge that’s been thrown my way. I fought Xavier Laroux in IPW, Jackson Magnum in HKW and most recently, Blyss Lockhart in the return of IWF. Most people in my position throughout my life would have ran away from the problems that have come my way but I’ve pushed through and became the man you see now. That’s the difference between Sasha Foote and I… She runs away from her problems when I face mine head on.”
Gavin stands up from the edge of the roof and takes a few steps towards the camera.
Gavin Grimes: “What do I mean about Sasha running away from her problems? Well, let’s look at her time here in NGW, for which she was best remembered for getting her ass kicked by Carmine Reaper several times. Oh by the way, Carmine is the dude who had that longest reigning champion record that I broke, that’s the fun fact of the day! Anyway, Sasha soon grew frustrated with management not booking her even though she was on a part-time contract. She could’ve been patient and had a match with me but what did she do? She did what’s in her nature, she fucking quit. Yeah, she might say she ‘asked’ for her release, which is the same as quitting, but whatever fits your narrative, right Sasha? Then she went off to CWT and signed a full time contract.”
“Why would you go and do that, Sasha? To spite NGW? How did you get more free time? Maybe you didn’t want the talent like Ash and me here in NGW to expose you for the fraud that you are. You hype yourself up like you’re on the same level as me but you haven’t done half of the shit that I have. You’re all talk and you always have been and the only reason you challenged me to this match is to make a name for yourself.”
“It’s obvious that CWT isn’t helping promote the Sasha Foote brand, am I right? You’ve lost a few matches to a couple of no namers and now you’re fighting in a fucking goldfish on a pole match. Make whatever excuses you want about it but the fact is that it’s a GOLDFISH ON A POLE MATCH. There’s nothing that you can say that will make that look good on your career. It makes you look like a fucking joke. While I just fought Blyss Lockhart in one of the greatest matches in Insurgency history, you’re wrestling for a goldfish. IWF WANTED GAVIN GRIMES ON THEIR SHOW! They put ME in their main event. A legend like Blyss Lockhart could’ve chosen anyone to fight but she chose ME! You want to know why? Because there’s nobody better in this sport right now than I am. There’s nobody who goes out to that ring and puts their body on the line like I do. Two days ago, I spilt my blood, sweat and tears all over the Insurgency ring and it’s because win or lose, I love this sport and I love the fans.”
“But the fact of the matter is that I won because that’s what I do. I fought a woman who used to be a mentor of mine, a woman that I looked up to and I beat the shit out of her while she did the same to me… To the point where she couldn’t walk out of the arena under her own power. I care about Blyss Lockhart, Sasha, she means so much to me on a personal and professional level. If I went to that depths with her in the ring, what makes you think that I won’t end you? At least Blyss Lockhart had the decency to respect me and where I came from but you? You’ve made false accusations, Sasha.”
Gavin glares into the camera and it’s obvious how angry he is.
Gavin Grimes: “You tried to play like your life is so much better. It’s not going to surprise me when you bring up my relationship with Ash, just like everyone else does but the fact of the matter is, everything that goes on with Ash and I, doesn’t effect me in ring ability. But what about your personal life, Sasha? It seems like you run away from things in that just like you ran away from NGW because you didn’t get your way. You’re like a pathetic child. You divorced Keith, whom who had a child with and you also adopted his step-daughter. You ran from your family and IMMEDIATELY got with Tyson Gregory as a rebound. You didn’t even give yourself a chance to heal, a chance to discover yourself.”
“Then you broke up with Tyson and immediately got into a relationship with Drew Davies and don’t get me started how you were flirting with Tyson on Twitter the other day; making sexual innuendo tweets, which Drew definitely saw. Who’s really the lowlife, Sasha? Is it me? The NGW Unified Heavyweight Champion, the guy who has been a beacon of light for NGW and has made this company the greatest it’s ever been? No, can’t be me. It has to be you. The girl who runs from relationship to relationship and company to company. You never know what you want, Sasha. That’s why you’re an ‘undefeated kickboxer’ who quit the sport because it wasn’t enough for you. It seems like nothing really is, is it? Tyson wasn’t, Keith and his daughter weren’t, NGW wasn’t and so on.”
“Hell, you even bailed on the ONE company where you won a Heavyweight Championship in, which was REDEFINE. Your problem, Sasha, is that you pretend to be a good person when deep down, you’re just a piece of shit. A giant, steaming pile of cow shit. That’s seriously what you are and I’ve exposed you for the world to see.”
He nods his head.
Gavin Grimes: “And if you think that your kickboxing background is going to help you against me then think again, Sasha… I’ve been doing boxing training with the best trainers Vegas has to offer thanks to Hayden, my sister Sophie’s boyfriend, who is a three times gold glove boxer. So even the one ‘advantage’ you normally have over most wrestlers, you don’t even have that against me. Maybe the one thing you’ll have as an advantage is the fact that I’ve been overdoing it in the ring. I’ve taken on too many matches lately and my body isn’t one hundred percent. The thing is, Blyss came in fresh against me with her last match happening all the way back in March and I still beat her; despite the fact the I’ve been keeping up with this crazy schedule.”
“So go ahead and talk about how I’m tired and breaking down, it still won’t mean shit when the bell rings because as soon as my ears hear that bell, the adrenaline takes whatever pain I have away and I fight the fight of my life until I drop my opponent on their head and pin them for the three count. It’s been since January that somebody pinned me, Sasha, what makes you think that you’re going to change that fact? You want to know why you’re going to lose? Because you’re wrestling with desperation and you have everything to lose. I don’t need to beat you to be relevant, I already am and I sure as hell don’t need this match against you. You need me, Sasha, you need me more than ever.”
“You see your career going down the drain, just like a dead goldfish, and the only beacon of light that you’re grasping onto is me. The thing about desperation, Sasha, is that it gets you in trouble. When you’re desperate, you make rash decisions and eventually make that costly mistake that will cost you the match. Like a lion hunting it’s prey, I will patiently wait until the right moment to pounce on you and take advantage of that costly mistake. While you fight for relevance and to stay afloat, I fight for a completely different reason. The fight is all I know…. It’s my mode of survival and it’s why when I step through those ropes, my opponent gets every ounce of fight that I can offer them in my body.”
“It’s why against Blyss, I was able to find that last bit of strength to kip up as she leaped off of the top rope and I grabbed her head out of the air and nailed The Crowning. I’m not like anything you’ll ever see in CWT or any other slum company with stupid gimmicks that you might end up working for. This is going to be the last relevant match that you ever compete in, Sasha. You’re fighting the longest reigning Unified Heavyweight Champion in NGW’s history, the man who’s never been pinned in this company. Despite everything I’ve done, I don’t let it go to my head like others do. I’ll take you seriously in the ring and I’ll be ready for you, Sasha. Will you be ready for me? Because from what you’ve said on Twitter, it seems like you don’t take me seriously at all. You call me a lifelong low life but you want to know what everyone else calls me? A fighter, the face of NGW… And most of all, they call me a champion. You’re none of those and you never will be. You'll be fighting for career relevancy on Saturday with your back up against the wall... But me? I'll be fighting that same old war that I've been fighting my whole life and the results will stay the same... I win!”
Gavin walks up to the tripod he setup on the roof and hits the end button and the scene goes black.
